Grilled Bananas

do you have a bbq Then you absolutely must try the revelation that is grilled bananas! This banana-flavored grilled version is the perfect finishing touch to a patio dinner. Grill up some burgers or veggies, then add those bananas and you have dessert waiting for you. Each tender bite is flavored with maple syrup, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. It gets even more perfect with some melt-in-the-mouth vanilla ice cream: restaurant quality with little effort! Alex and I were initially skeptical about this idea, but on the first bite we were sold.

Ingredients for the grilled bananas

There are only a handful of ingredients you need for great flavor here! This grilled dessert is naturally sweet and uses pure maple syrup to create a slightly spicy sauce. What you need for grilled bananas:

  • Bananas: Be sure to use ripe but still firm bananas. If they’re overripe, they’ll go mushy after cooking (which is okay to taste, but not as pretty to look at).
  • maple syrup: Use pure maple syrup: you can use honey if you wish
  • Rum: Add some rum if you like! This channels the banana vibe even more
  • Cinammon
  • Ginger
  • nutmeg
  • Vanilla Ice Cream: Topped with melty vanilla ice cream, it gives star status
  • Chopped Pecans: Optional, but crunching the toast adds the finishing touch

How to Cut Bananas for Grilling (Omit the Skin!)

Here’s the important part about grilling bananas! Well, two things. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Leave the skin on. You will be roasting the banana in the skin: so don’t peel it! The skin acts as a protective barrier, almost like a pan. It holds the banana together and makes it easier to turn.
  • Cut lengthwise. Cut the banana in half lengthwise, creating two long, boat-shaped pieces.

Tips for grilling bananas

Once you’ve sliced your bananas and left them in their skins, you’re ready to grill! All you need to know at this point is the grilling temperature and approximate timing. Keep that in mind and keep them rehearsing all summer long! Here’s what you need to know (or jump straight to the recipe):

  • Preheat a grill on medium: it’s 375 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Halve the bananas with the skin on. See notes above.
  • Brush the tips with maple syrup and spices.
  • Grill cut-side down for 3 to 4 minutesuntil you get those nice tank marks.
  • Flip and grill cut-side up for 4-5 minutes. This completes the cooking.
  • Scoop the bananas out of their skins with a spoon. Decorate and enjoy!

Add toasted pecans or candied pecans

Top these grilled bananas with vanilla ice cream for an eye-catching, restaurant-style dessert! We also like to use chopped pecans to add a satisfying crunch. You can use plain pecans for this. But if you’re looking for some wow factor, here are some other options:

  • Roasted Pecans: Simply heating the pecans in a skillet for a few minutes creates a nice nutty flavor. You can taste the difference! Go to How to Roast Pecans.
  • Maple Glazed Pecans: Better yet, glaze your pecans with maple syrup so they have a sweet, crunchy coating. Go for glazed pecans.
