Would you like a spice blend that captures the magic of the Mediterranean? try that Greek spice! This spice mix is ​​simple but absolutely packed with flavor. While there are many Greek spice blends out there, homemade spice blends skip the additives and preservatives of store-bought versions. In addition, you can adjust the salt content as you wish. When Alex and I first tried this spice we were blown away! We like it even better than the Italian seasoning: It’s great sprinkled on top of shrimp, fish, veggies, and dips.

What is Greek spice?

There’s no official definition for something like Greek seasoning, as compared to standardized concoctions like Old Bay or even taco seasoning. There is no Greek spice in Greece! It is a blend of spices created to allow chefs to quickly add a Mediterranean touch to dishes.

The mixes you’ll find in the store contain herbs that are widely used in Greek cuisine, such as oregano and dill. Beyond that, there’s not much standardization!

How to make Greek spices

For this recipe we wanted to keep it very simple and use ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. After trying this spice blend on grilled veggies, we were hooked! Mix the following herbs:

  • Dried oregano
  • Dried dill
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • salt and black pepper

How long to store homemade spices

You can store your homemade Greek spice mix in an airtight container 6 months to 1 year. Of course, it’s best when it’s freshest! Spices can be stored in a cool, dry place for 8 months to 1 year. With this spice mix you can breathe new life into old spices.

Ways to use Greek spices

Greek seasoning is a great way to liven up fried or grilled vegetables, fish, or even dips or spreads. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  1. Grilled vegetables: Take grilled broccoli, grilled peppers or grilled mushrooms to new heights.
  2. Greek dip: Stir into Greek yogurt to taste and serve with flatbread or vegetables. Or just sprinkle on olive oil and use as a dip for bread.
  3. Fried vegetables: Roasted broccoli, roasted cauliflower, or roasted eggplant are fantastic with a shake or two.
  4. Fried vegetables: Perfectly sautéed carrots or sautéed asparagus also like Greek spices.
  5. Citizens: Add it to grilled portobello burgers, the best veggie burgers, or any burger recipe you like.
  6. Shrimp: A pinch of grilled shrimp, baked shrimp, or sautéed shrimp is perfection.
  7. Salmon: Try Baked Salmon or Easy Cedar Planked Salmon with a squeeze of lemon.

  • 2 tablespoons dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp dried dill
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  1. Whisk the ingredients together in a small bowl. Transfer to an airtight container or jar. Store in a cool, dry place for 6 months to 1 year.
