Grapefruit smoothie

Here is a healthy drink that will surprise you with its light and refreshing taste: the Grapefruit smoothie! The name might sound like boring health food, but it’s anything but. This wonderfully fruity puree tastes like a combination of sorbet and ice cream: crisp and tangy like grapefruit, tropical like pineapple and creamy like banana and yoghurt. Our 4 year old couldn’t stop sipping if that’s saying anything! This surprised us with its pleasantly creamy taste.

Ingredients of this grapefruit smoothie

A grapefruit smoothie can be prepared in a number of ways. Some people like to chop up the grapefruit and throw it all in the blender, but for us it takes way too long. Instead, squeeze some fresh juice, combine with other fruits and enjoy! Here’s what you need for our spin on a grapefruit smoothie:

  • Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice (1 grapefruit)
  • frozen pineapple
  • banana (ambient temperature)
  • greek yogurt
  • 1 cup of ice

Mix it up and taste it: it’s deliciously creamy and lemony! If you like a sweeter smoothie, you can add a dash of maple syrup or honey. But we liked the taste as is without the sweetener.

Why add yogurt

Greek yogurt is ideal for smoothies: it gives a creamy texture to the puree and a good dose of protein to fruity purees. Don’t you have the Greek variety? Try plain yogurt instead! It would also work with a sweet yogurt like vanilla if that’s all you have.

Variant: vegan grapefruit smoothie

Would you like a non-dairy grapefruit smoothie instead? Omit the Greek yogurt and add more grapefruit juice as needed until the smoothie blends into a creamy puree. We also recommend adding more protein, especially if you’re eating this smoothie as a meal replacement. Read on for ideas!

Other protein adders

Want to add more protein to this grapefruit smoothie? We generally recommend the nut butter, but that would compete with the delicate citrus flavor here. Instead, try one of the following options:

  • Chia seeds. Add protein and fiber with chia seeds! 2 tablespoons of chia seeds add 4 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber. (See chia seed smoothie.)
  • Vanilla Protein Powder: Protein powder works here too. This is the protein powder we love: it tastes good and isn’t too artificial.
