It’s the dead of winter here in Indianapolis, with lots of gray skies, snow and rain. While we’ve had lots of fun things to celebrate this month (the birth of our Pretty Simple Cooking cookbook, my birthday, and Larson’s birthday), we’re still craving fresh flavors. This Ginger Lime Hummus spices up hummus with fresh Asian flavors: ginger, lime, garlic and soy sauce. And speaking of “pretty easy,” this one’s actually super easy: just throw 6 ingredients into a food processor and puree!

Make Lime Ginger Hummus

Why make hummus yourself? Store-bought hummus can be expensive, and we find that cheaper brands can sometimes taste too salty or too garlicky. But the real reason we do it: It’s fun! Every time we make it at home I enjoy it more because we made it with both hands.

Some of the ingredients in this ginger lime hummus recipe are pretty standard: chickpeas, garlic, salt, and tahini. What is tahini? Tahini is a sesame seed paste typically used in Middle Eastern or Mediterranean dishes. It’s just sesame and salt! Along with hummus, tahini is perfect for creamy dressings on salads and buddha bowls… and even cookies. If you have leftover tahini after making this homemade hummus recipe, try our 13 delicious and healthy tahini recipes.

Along with these standard ingredients, this lime hummus includes some unique ingredients:

  • lime juice is used in place of lemon
  • fresh ginger root gives it a unique taste
  • soy pasture adds extra depth.

Vegan Banh Mi with Lime Ginger Hummus

Serve up this Ginger Lime Hummus

We made this Ginger Lime Hummus especially for ours Vegan Banh Mi SandwichH! It’s an ultra-delicious version of the traditional Vietnamese sandwich, topped with this hummus and topped with spicy pickles and coriander. Since this Ginger Lime Hummus is good on its own, we broke it up into its own recipe, so we thought of making it on its own too!

Aside from the vegan banh mi, here are a few other ways to use this lime ginger hummus:

  • Use hummus instead of mayonnaise on a sandwich—Spread hummus on the sandwiches for a tastier overall flavor.
  • Dip pita chips in hummus—simple store-bought flatbread or homemade pita chips pair perfectly with hummus, whatever you have on hand!
  • Enjoy with falafel— Mix things up a little by dipping falafel in flavored hummus, or spread them on our Harissa Yogurt Falafel Patties.
  • Make homemade vinaigrette– Mix hummus with some hot water, olive oil and lime juice for an easy homemade dressing – flavored with ginger and lime!
