The Gin Mojito is a delicious version of the classic with gin instead of rum! It’s as refreshing as the original.

Gin mojito

Want to make a mojito but no rum in sight? Do one Gin mojito! Of course, a mojito without rum is not a real mojito. If you’re a cocktail connoisseur like us, you know that the Gin Mojito is simply a gin gimlet with mint. But if you want to play with the alcohol of this classic drink, this is the best way to do it! It’s tart and refreshing, with just the right amount of botanical gin. We tried the mojito with vodka and tequila, but the gin version takes the cake.

What’s in a Gin Mojito?

The Gin Mojito is a revamped version of the mojito, a classic cocktail invented in Havana, Cuba. The modern version of this drink emerged in America in the 1930s when Ernest Hemingway helped popularize it.

Of course, if you want to make a mojito, we encourage you to do so real thing with white rum! But we hope you have a reason. To sling a gin, simply substitute an equal amount of gin for the white rum. Here’s what you need:

A gin mojito: pros and cons

Is the gin mojito really good? Do you recommend using gin in a mojito? Here is our honest opinion:

  • It’s not entirely real, but a gin mojito is the best alternative. We tried a vodka mojito and a tequila mojito and can confirm: gin is the best alternative to a mojito.
  • It’s basically a Mint Gimlet: and it tastes great. Consider it a Cool Mint Gin Gimlet: beautifully minty and refreshing!

Crush the mint, then shake

The most important skill to make a gin mojito? Confuse with! When grinding, herbs or fruits are gently crushed to release their juice. All you have to do for this drink is mash the mint and then add the rest of the ingredients. Here’s what to do:

  • Use a cocktail pestle. Use this cocktail muddler or an unfinished wooden spoon.
  • Crush the mint first. Mash the herb gently to extract all the oils. Do it right in the shaker.
  • Drink ingredients, add ice and shake! Then strain the drink into the glass. Don’t have a cocktail shaker? You can use a glass jar with a lid (drill holes in the lid for straining).

Best gin to use

The best gin for a gin mojito? Well, if you’re already fooling around with a rum drink: Everything is allowed! Here are some of our top picks and what we would avoid:

  • Malfy Gin has a great flavor that goes well in cocktails.
  • Local Gins: Local gin can be top notch! In Indianapolis we buy from the 8th Day Distillery or the Tango Hotel
  • What to avoid: To us, Tanqueray Gin is very floral and can overwhelm drinks. Opihr Gin has very advanced spices (it almost tasted like cumin in this drink!)
