Strawberry Mojito

What’s better than a mojito? A Strawberry Mojito! We’re big fans of the classic rum drink: in fact, it’s one of our top cocktails of all time. But how to intensify? Add fresh berries to the mix! The sweet, tart taste of ripe strawberries only enhances this classic. Mix some fresh berries straight into the cocktail and you have a deliciously vibrant drink that’s perfect for summer…or anytime.

What is a strawberry mojito?

This strawberry mojito is a twist on the classic mojito, a classic cocktail invented in Havana, Cuba. Some say the origins of this drink date back to the 16th century, with an early combination of lime, sugar and rum. The modern version of it gained traction in the 1930s when writer Ernest Hemingway helped popularize it in America close.

The mojito has made it onto the International Bartender Association’s official IBA cocktail list, meaning it has an official definition. Twisting the strawberry on top will add fresh strawberries to the mixture. You will need the following ingredients:

Strawberry Mojito Recipe

Mix ripe berries directly into the drink

There’s no need to make strawberry syrup for this mojito (although that would be delicious too!). Instead, you puree fresh berries directly into the drink! When grinding, herbs or fruits are gently crushed to release their juices, which helps integrate their flavors into the drink. Here’s what you should know about confusion with this drink:

  • Use a cocktail pestle. It’s the right tool for the job! Here’s a cocktail pestle, or you can use an unfinished wooden spoon (it’s a little clumsy, but it works!).
  • Soft crush the mint! The key to soiling herbs is to be gentle and use a light touch. Don’t crush it with great force.
  • Add the strawberries and puree again. Blend gently until they break down. You can use a little more force with the mint.

Once stowed, it’s as easy as dumping and shaking. Add all ingredients, shake in a shaker and color in a glass. Then fill up with mineral water!

Sparkling Water vs Club Soda

Speaking of sparkling water…is that club soda? Is it seltzer water? Well, we use the term to encompass both. You can use club soda or seltzer water in this strawberry mojito recipe: any kind of unflavored sparkling water, really! Here are some of the differences between lemonade, seltzer and tonic water:

  • mineral water or seltzer water is carbonated water with no additives – just fizzy!
  • Soda is a sparkling water with added minerals that give it a salty and slightly sweet taste. It’s great in cocktails (here are our favorite club soda cocktails).
  • tonic water is carbonated water with added quinine and sugar. Do not use it in a mojito due to its distinct flavor. But you can use it for a gin tonic, vodka tonic, tequila tonic or whiskey tonic!
