The best coffee for an iced coffee? Dark Roast Coffee. We like the coffee’s light and medium roasts, but we find that the bitter taste of a dark roast is what we expect from an iced coffee. Some brands we recommend: Starbucks Espresso Roast or Intelligentsia Black Cat.

What do you need for French Press Iced Coffee? Especially a French Press! Most of the remaining tools are optional:

  • French press coffee machine: We use this 34 ounce (1 liter) Bodum French Press. The Bodum brand has been making this coffee tool since the 1940s.
  • Coffee grinder (optional): You want a medium grind. You can use any type of coffee grinder, and it’s optional if you have pre-ground coffee. The most durable is an electric burr grinder.
  • Filtered water (optional): Filtered water tastes best with coffee: We use this filter jug.
  • Grocery scale (optional): You can use a digital food scale to weigh out the coffee and water, or simply use the ratio of 1 cup of coffee grounds to 4 cups of water.
  • Kettle (optional): To easily measure the water temperature, you can use a kettle.

They make double-strength French press coffee, then pour it over ice (which dilutes it). This method uses half the water than our normal method.

  1. To grind coffee: Using a coffee grinder, grind 75 grams of coffee beans to a medium grind. It’s about 1 cup.
  2. heat water: Heat 2 cups of hot but not boiling water (200 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit) with an electric kettle. Or bring it to a boil on the stove, then let it sit for 1 minute to lower the temperature.
  3. Add coffee grounds: Place the coffee grounds on the bottom of the pan.
  4. Let the coffee steep for 1 minute: Add hot water to coffee level and stir with a spoon. Set a timer and wait 1 minute.
  5. Add water and let steep for 4 minutes: Fill the French press to the brim (just below the spout) and stir again. Set a timer and wait 4 minutes.
  6. Dive: Place the lid on the French Press and slowly push the plunger all the way down.
  7. Surcharge: Fill two tall glasses with ice. Pour the hot coffee over the ice (about half of the ice should melt). Add additional ice if needed.
