Here’s an easy-to-remember French press formula so you can brew anytime, anywhere. How Much Coffee for a French Press?

  • The best French press coffee ratio is 1:13 coffee to water, or about 1 gram of coffee for 13 grams of water. You can adjust it to your liking, but it should make a good cup of coffee with dark, medium, or light roast coffee. An even simpler way to think about it?
  • Use 1 cup of ground coffee and 4 cups of water. That’s 1 part ground beans to 4 parts water, no matter what size French Press you use.

This ratio is a little different from other best methods that use less coffee compared to water. But we tested this recipe multiple times with light roast, medium roast, and dark roast coffee. And we can assure you that this ratio of French press coffee makes for the best cup!

Ready to make French Press coffee? Everything you really need from a French Press! Here’s the one we prefer and a few other gears, all of which are optional:

  • French press coffee machine: The Bodum brand has been making this coffee tool since the 1940s. We use this 34 ounce (1 liter) Bodum French Press.
  • Coffee of any roast: You can use light, medium or dark roast coffee here and get a good cup with any of them.
  • Filtered water (optional): Filtered water tastes best with coffee: We use this filter jug. But it is not mandatory here.
  • Coffee grinder: You need a medium grind here and you can use any type of grinder. An electric grinder is the most durable, but isn’t needed for the French Press like it is for pouring.
  • Grocery scale (optional): You can use a digital food scale to weigh out the coffee and water, or simply use the ratio of 1 cup of coffee grounds to 4 cups of water.
  • Kettle (optional): To easily measure the water temperature, you can use a kettle. (It also works for tea, matcha, and many other beverages.)

Do you have the equipment you need? Let’s make french press coffee! This type of coffee is extremely forgiving. The basic steps? Add the coffee, wait 5 minutes and immerse. Here’s what to do:

  1. To grind coffee: Grind 70 grams (1 cup) of coffee beans to a medium grind. The size of the grist is important: if it’s too fine, scale can form; if it’s too coarse, it’s not tasty enough.
  2. heat water: Heat 4 cups of hot but not boiling water (200 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit) in an electric kettle or bring to a boil on the stovetop, then let stand 1 minute to lower the temperature.

  6. Dive: Place the lid on the French Press and slowly push the plunger all the way down. Serve immediately. (Tip: If the tamper is difficult to press, use a coarser coffee grinder next time. If it is very easy to press, use a slightly finer grind.)
