Do you have a bottle of Fireball whiskey to use? try it old-fashioned fireball! The signature Fireball drink is sweet, mixing this cinnamon whiskey with ginger ale or apple cider. But why not old fashioned? A hint of fireball gives this classic slightly spicy notes on the finish. By the way, you can completely avoid sugar. That’s how it’s done!

What’s in that Fireball drink?

Many drinks made with Fireball are sweetened to bring out the cinnamon notes in the whiskey (like Fireball and Apple Cider or the Cinnamon Toast Crunch). But why not have a more balanced rotation with this liqueur? Pair it with bourbon and bitters in this version of the Old Fashioned.

The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest cocktails ever! It was first documented by a New York newspaper in the early 19th century, long before the great cocktails we know today. This rotation uses Fireball Whiskey instead of the standard sugar cube to add nuance to flavors and a tangy finish with every sip. What you need for this Fireball drink:

  • fireball whisky
  • Bourbon whiskey or any other type of whiskey: Rye, Canadian, etc.
  • Angostura Bitters

To prepare the drink, combine the Fireball, bourbon, and bitters in a lowball glass with a large ice cube. Squeeze the oils from an orange peel into the drink and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Boost it with clear ice

Want the best Fireball drink? Use clear ice. Clear ice is crystalline ice cubes that you can cut into organic shapes instead of cloudy ice cubes from an ice test. We use them in more of our cocktail recipes, but they’re an absolute must for an Old Fashioned. Here’s how:

  • Make clear ice in a small cooler. The cooler just has to fit in your freezer. Go to How to make transparent ice.
  • Use a clear ice maker. We use this clear ice maker and it works great! It also fits easily in your freezer.

Find out more about Fireball Whisky

Here’s the thing about Fireball… it’s not technically Whiskey because it has a lower alcohol content than the original. It’s way cuter too! Here’s what you should know about this flavored whiskey:

  • Cinnamon Fireball Whisky is a blend of Canadian whiskey and cinnamon flavors developed in Canada in the 1980s. Originally part of a line of flavored liquors from Seagram’s, it is now manufactured by the Sazerac company.
  • How does it taste? Fireball Whiskey has a sweet flavor with a strong finish of cinnamon candy and spicy whiskey.
  • What ABV is Fireball? Fireball has 33% ABV. Standard whiskey is required to have 40% ABV, Fireball is not technically Whiskey. It is considered a flavored whiskey or a specialty distilled liqueur. It’s so sweet, it tastes more like a liquor!
