Steamed Asparagus

Want a quick and healthy way to cook asparagus? Attempt steamed asparagus. A word of warning first: This isn’t our favorite way to prepare this healthy vegetable. Our favorites are baked asparagus or grilled asparagus, cooked golden and tender in a hot oven. Second best is seared in a hot pan. But steaming is a valid option: it’s healthier than most methods because you don’t have to use as much fat! When done right, it turns out light green and crunchy tender: perfect with a squeeze of lemon. Here’s how!

How to steam asparagus

The trick to steamed asparagus is: don’t overcook it! Since all asparagus vary in size and maturity, use a time range to steam them. The ideal time to steam this green vegetable is around 2-5 minutes. Here, too, it depends on the thickness: thin, thin asparagus steams faster than thick, tough asparagus.

Equipment needed: You will need a steamer or steamer basket for this recipe. Here is a steam basket that you can buy online.

Step 1: Chop the asparagus.

With asparagus, you need to cut off the tough ends. You know where it looks almost white-purple? Hack this part. Next, we like to steam the asparagus into about 2-inch pieces.

Step 2: Boil the water.

The most important things you need to know about how to steam asparagus: First bring the water to a boil! Don’t be tempted to boil the water in the pan with the veggies. You boil the water in a saucepan or saucepan before adding the vegetables.

Step 3: Add asparagus, cover and steam for 2-5 minutes until tender and crispy.

Once the water is boiling, add the vegetables and cover. Cook until nicely green and soft, 2 to 5 minutes. Continue the tastings during this period: it is important not to walk away! Even a minute or so can turn asparagus from bright green to muddy, overcooked yellow-green.

Step 4: Drain and season.

Remove from the stove and place the asparagus in a bowl. Mix it with olive oil, lemon juice and salt. That’s it! Perfectly steamed asparagus.
