Instead of ham, liquid smoke.

Traditional split pea soup often contains ham or bacon. For our version of Instant Pot Pea Soup, we wanted to make a vegan recipe based on whole plants. To mimic the smoky flavor of ham and bacon a bit, we used liquid smoke instead! It’s a small jar and you can usually find it near the condiments in the grocery store.

Is liquid smoke synthetic? No, it actually is Natural product resulting from the condensation of smoke from burning wood. How cool is that? You’ll find it’s quite strong, so use it sparingly. This Instant Pot Pea Soup is the ultimate meal: topped, plant-based, and easy to make in a pressure cooker. This is a delicious healthy vegan dinner recipe!

  • 1 yellow onion
  • 4 carrots
  • 2 celery ribs
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 liters vegetable soup
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 pounds of peas
  • 2 Garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • Ground fresh pepper

  1. Finely chop the onion. Finely chop carrots and celery.
  2. Activate jump mode and add the olive oil to the Instant Pot. When hot, add onion, celery and carrots and sauté 7 minutes until onions are tender. Add the broth, kosher salt, and peas to the Instant Pot. Lock the Instant Pot lid. Place the pressure relief (vent) handle in the “seal” position.
  3. Cook at high pressure for 15 minutes: Press the pressure cook button, make sure the ‘high pressure’ setting is selected and set the time. Note that it will take 10-15 minutes for the pan to “preheat” and build pressure before you start cooking. (Avoid touching the metal part of the lid during cooking.)
  4. Fast Release: Release any remaining steam from the Instant Pot by setting the pressure release handle to “vent” and covering your hand with a heated towel or pad. Never put your hands or face near the opening when dispensing steam. Open the lid of the pressure cooker.
  5. Add the final flavors: Stir in grated garlic (you can grate it straight into the pan) and liquid smoke, freshly ground pepper. Add a little more kosher salt if desired. Allow to cool and thicken about 10 minutes before serving (it will thicken as it cools). Garnish with hot sauce. Serve with crushed crackers or biscuits.
