blueberry Dessert

Here’s the best easy and delicious sauce you can make with a batch of blueberries: blueberry Dessert! This idea came from a crop of summer blueberries that we picked recently. This compote is one of our new favorite blueberry recipes because it is simply. It only takes 5 minutes to prepare and the taste is incredible. It’s pure, tangy blueberry lightly sweetened with maple syrup! All you need is 3 ingredients and you can use fresh or frozen berries. It’s absolutely perfect on pancakes…or melty vanilla ice cream, by the way.

Ingredients for the blueberry compote

Yes, you only need a handful of ingredients for this blueberry compote! Alex and I naturally love sweet fruit sauces, so we often use maple syrup as a sweetener. Maple syrup slightly sweetens recipes and adds an interesting nuance to the taste. If you don’t have maple, you can substitute any type of sugar. This compote also works with honey or even agave syrup if that’s your favorite sweetener! Here are the ingredients for the blueberry compote:

  • blueberriesfresh or frozen
  • maple syrup (or sugar, honey or agave syrup)
  • vanilla extract
  • Water

Use fresh or frozen blueberries…or expired berries

You can use fresh or frozen blueberries for this blueberry compote. Both taste great and you won’t notice much of a difference in taste or texture. Another good thing: a compote is a great way to use up berries that are a little past their prime. Since you’ll be cooking them, it’s perfect for berries that are just fresh (but not moldy, of course!). There’s a great way to reduce food waste with fruit: just make a compote!

How to make a compote in 5 minutes

Making blueberry compote is so easy you hardly need a recipe. The good thing about a recipe, however, is that it delivers just the right amount of sweetness. We found that ¼ cup of sweetener was just enough to sweeten 2 cups of blueberries. Here’s everything you need to know to make a compote:

  • Heat the ingredients over medium heat in a can.
  • Cook for about 5 minutesuntil the blueberries break down and form a sauce. Blueberries contain natural pectin that thickens the sauce as it cooks! If you would like a thicker sauce, you can also dissolve 1 teaspoon of cornstarch in 1 tablespoon of water and add to the sauce. But we find that it’s quite thick by nature.

What is a compote anyway?

Is a compote just a sauce? Yes! A compote is fresh or dried fruit cooked in a sweet sauce. Usually the sauce stays quite thick, giving you the texture of chunks of fruit. It is often spooned over desserts such as cakes and ice cream. But you can also use it on pancakes or waffles (see below).

Try this variant: blueberry sauce!

Here’s a twist on blueberry compote: this easy blueberry sauce! There are a few differences between this compote and the sauce: the sauce is sweeter and also thicker. It’s thickened with cornstarch for a lighter shine. It also has a bit of lemon zest for a tart undertone. We love both equally!
