How to Make BBQ Tofu: Quick and Easy

A great advantage of this recipe: You can use the tofu from the package, no pressing necessary! Many tofu recipes call for the water to be squeezed out of the tofu for 30 minutes before the recipe is prepared. But if you’re like us, you don’t have another 30 minutes to waste. This BBQ Tofu recipe uses tofu right out of the box! Here are the basic steps (but scroll down for the full recipe!):

  • Cut the tofu and wipe with a towel.
  • Fry in a pan over medium heat for 5 minutes. Turn and cook for another 5 minutes.
  • Add the BBQ sauce, soy sauce, and chilli sauce and cook over low heat for another 4 minutes until the sauce thickens.

That’s it! This is one of the quickest and easiest ways to flavor tofu irresistibly good.

We used an organic BBQ sauce for this BBQ Tofu recipe. Using a quality brand is essential as the taste of sauces can vary. Look for sauces sweetened with sugar or natural ingredients, not high fructose corn syrup. You can also use homemade barbecue sauce, like one of these recipes:

This epic BBQ Tofu recipe is quick, easy, and loaded with sweet and savory flavors! A great way to turn anyone into a tofu fan.


  • 14– Ounces of Firm or Extra Firm Tofu*
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil
  • Kosher salt
  • ¾ cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy pasture
  • ½ tbsp Garlic chilli sauce, if desired

  1. Cut the tofu into large cubes (approx. 1.5″ x 2″) and pat dry with a towel.
  2. Pour the oil into a nonstick skillet and add the diced tofu and a few pinches of kosher salt. Turn the heat to medium-high. Fry for 5 to 6 minutes until lightly browned on the underside.
  3. Take the pan off the heat to reduce splattering. Flip the tofu with chopsticks (the easiest way!) or tongs. Turn the heat back to medium-high and cook for another 5-6 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Meanwhile, mix together the BBQ sauce, soy sauce, and chilli garlic sauce.
  5. Take the pan off the heat again and drizzle with the sauce (watch out for spitting). Turn the heat back to low and cook for 4 minutes, turning occasionally, until the sauce thickens. Serve immediately.

Remarks

*Note: You can also use this method with grilled tofu: just substitute the sauce for the BBQ sauce in this recipe.
