The shrimp species to look for

Most grocery stores have many options when it comes to shrimp. Here are some things to look out for when preparing this barbecue shrimp recipe and some sustainability advice:

  • Medium sized shrimp: The medium is labeled 41 to 50 units (the number of shrimp per pound). You can use any size here, but we prefer the medium size for this particular recipe.
  • tomboy: Wild fish caught in your country is generally a sustainable choice. There are also quality options at well-regulated farms; see Seafood Watch consumer guide.
  • tail or peeled: The tail is the best, but it can be messy when you eat it. Make sure you have a bowl for cocks! Peeled shrimp are easier to eat.
  • Fresh or frozen: Both are of similar quality! Frozen shrimp can be as valuable as fresh when frozen as soon as they are caught. How to defrost shrimp.

Tips for preparing grilled shrimp

This BBQ Shrimp recipe is quick and easy: mix the ingredients for the sauce, sear the almost-cooked shrimp, then add the sauce and you’re done cooking. Here are some tips to keep in mind when walking:

  • Use your largest pan. You don’t want to overcrowd the pan or the shrimp will steam instead of popping. Use a very large skillet for 1½ pounds of shrimp. If you don’t have a large enough pan, you can also fry in portions.
  • Cook until the shrimp are half cooked, then turn and add the sauce. You will cook the shrimp with the sauce in the pan the rest of the time.
