Do you have leftover basil in your garden? Let’s do it basil tea! There are so many ways to use basil, from basil pesto to margherita pizza. But what if you want the easiest and healthiest way to use it? To brew tea! Alex and I made herbal tea recipes using all the herbs from our garden: oregano, thyme and mint. Basil tea was next on our list: and this herb tastes best when paired with some black tea and lemon. It adds a subtle, peppery flavor that’s irresistible! Here’s what to do.

How to make basil tea

You only need three ingredients for this basil tea recipe: a black tea bag, fresh basil and a lemon wedge. While basil is best known for flavoring Italian recipes, its aroma brings intrigue to tea. This recipe has a slightly different method than our other herbal tea recipes. Since the basil flavor isn’t strong enough on its own, pair it with black tea and lemon for the perfect brew! Here’s what to do:

  1. Boil: Boil a pot of water. We use a kettle (which we also use for our morning coffee).
  2. Harvest herbs: Take 6 large basil leaves.
  3. Confusion: Using a wooden spoon, gently mash the lemon and basil.
  4. Soaking: Put a bag of black tea in the cup and fill it with boiling water. Let it rest for 5 minutes and then enjoy!

  • 1 Bag of black tea
  • 6 large basil leaf
  • 1/2 slice of lemon

  1. Boil the water.
  2. Use a wooden spoon to gently mash (mash) the basil leaves and lemon circle at the bottom of the tea glass.
  3. Put the black tea bag in the cup. Pour in water and let steep for 5 minutes. Discard the basil, lemon and tea bags and drink immediately.
