Avocado cream

Here’s a luxuriously creamy green sauce that needs to be in your repertoire: Avocado cream! Silky and rich, it combines the earthy, buttery notes of this green fruit with zesty lime and rich sour cream. It’s ideal in a spoonful of tacos to add creamy and savory notes: but the uses are endless. Try it over fish, as a dip for chips or quesadillas, or over rice bowls. It is a must!

Ingredients of this avocado cream recipe

cream is a thickened cream that is often used in traditional Mexican cuisine to cover soups, tacos, burritos and enchiladas. A traditional avocado cream would be made with real Mexican cream. But this type of sauce can also be prepared with sour cream, yoghurt or mayonnaise. Our recipe is inspired by the rich cultural food tradition of this Mexican sauce. Here’s what you need:

  • Sour cream or Mexican cream (or Greek yogurt and mayonnaise; see below)
  • mayonnaise add some wealth
  • lime juice
  • grated garlic
  • Salt

Would you like a different type of cream? Try lime crema or chipotle crema.

Use Mexican cream

mexican cream is a thickened cream that is often used in traditional Mexican cooking. The texture is somewhere between American sour cream and French crème fraîche. It’s richer than sour cream because it contains more fat.

You can sometimes find Mexican cream at your local grocery store: look near sour cream and crème fraiche. But not all grocery stores stock them, so feel free to make them yourself! It’s a fun kitchen DIY that takes 48 hours to thicken. Go to How to Make Mexican Cream.

Storage information and how to keep it green

Unlike guacamole, avocado cream stays green for days. There is no need to place plastic wrap on the surface like there is with guacamole. The lime juice contains enough acidity to keep the avocado green instead of browning like it usually does. It sounds crazy, but try it: it works! This avocado cream will keep well refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 5 days.

Ways to serve avocado cream

Avocado Cream is similar to our favorite avocado sauce: without the cilantro and a little richer thanks to the sour cream! It has become a staple here due to its silky texture and tangy taste. Here are some of our favorite uses in recipes:
