How to make dried apples… in the oven!

No dehydrator is needed for these dried apples. You can make them in your oven! It takes a few hours to cook them on low, but it’s completely straightforward. Here’s the main method you’ll use (or continue with the recipe below):

  • Cut the apples into thin slices. It’s easier to use a mandolin; see below.
  • Place on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with cinnamon for best results. Don’t let apples overlap: keep them all in an even layer.
  • Bake for ½ to 2 hours until dry. Cook until curly and light brown. Test the taste of an apple chip – wait a few minutes for it to cool before testing.
  • cool fries. After cooling, they will be even crunchier!

Use a mandolin for even slices

Here’s our top tip for making next-level dried apples: Use a mandolin. No, not the stringed instrument (it’s a mandolin). A mandolin is a flat kitchen slicer with a sharp blade. You guide the food over the blade and it makes even cuts. This is the easiest way to get perfectly even slices as you don’t have to reposition your knife every time.

If you don’t have a mandolin, we highly recommend getting one to make dried apples! You can use a knife for the job, but it’s so much easier with the right tool. Here’s a link to buy the mandolin we use: we’ve had several over the years and this one is far better. Note: Be sure to wear the protective glove when using a mandolin! Because of the open blade, read all safety information about this tool.

How to make dried apples

Note: Portion size is small!

Most ovens can only hold 2 baking sheets at a time. That means the highest amount of dried apples you can make at once is about 3 medium apples. Once you’ve piled all your dried apples into a storage jar, it might not look like a ton of apples. In fact, we could eat it all in one sitting! As such, you may need to portion your dried apples to ensure they last a while.

How to store dried apples

Because the portion size is small, you can eat all of your dried apples per day. And that’s it! But if you can save some, put them in a covered jar or container. They will keep in a pantry for 1 week or more. If you cook them long enough to remove all of the moisture, they should stay crisp during storage.

How to Prepare Oven Dried Apples! This healthy snack is crunchy and flavorful with cinnamon… and will have your kitchen smelling heavenly.

  • 3 medium sized apples
  • cinnamon, for sprinkling

  1. Preheat oven to 225 Fahrenheit.
  2. Wash the apples and then slice them very thin, about 1/8″. We recommend using a mandolin for cutting. Leave the cores in the apples, but remove the cores when you cut them.
  3. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Arrange the apple slices in a single layer on the tray, as tightly as possible without touching each other. Sprinkle with cinnamon if you like.
  4. Bake 1 ½ to 2 hours until rolled up and lightly browned. The chips will crisp up after a few minutes of cooling. (To check if it’s done, take out an apple chip and set it on the counter for a few minutes until it cools, then taste if it’s crispy.) For example, store the apple chips in a sealed container or a jar at room temperature for 1 week.
