How to Make Roasted Black Beans

Preparing these crispy roasted black beans is easy: it only takes a few minutes of manual labor! That said: they need 1 hour to roast, so plan ahead. You want to roast a batch in the evening or at the weekend. Make them ahead of time and then you can snack on a jar for a week! Here are the key steps (or go straight to the recipe):

  • Rinse and dry. Drain the beans from the can and rinse with a sieve. Shake off as much water as possible. Then dry them gently with a towel: but not too much because you don’t want to crush them!
  • Mix with olive oil and spices. Here you use cumin, chilli powder, garlic powder and cinnamon.
  • Roast for 1 hour! Place them on parchment-lined baking sheets (for easy cleanup) and toast until dry and crispy, 1 hour. It is so easy! Then let cool for about 10 minutes: they will be even crispier.

  • 2 15-ounce cans of black beans (or 3 cups cooked black beans or Instant Pot)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon Cinammon
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt

  4. Pour the black beans onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and spread in a single layer. Bake until crisp and dry, about 45 to 60 minutes, stirring at 30 minutes.
  5. Exact cooking time depends on the type of bean, so watch closely for the last few minutes, taste-test and remove when the black beans are golden brown but before they get very dark and tough. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before storing; The black beans will become even crispier as they cool. Store in an airtight container in a dry cupboard for up to 1 week.
