Ingredients for making Fish Taco Sauce

This fish taco sauce is easy because let’s face it: when you’re making tacos, you want to focus your energy on the main event! There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of time over fish…only to find the sauce takes a long time and messes up a blender in the process. Not so with this fish taco sauce! You can do it in 5 minutes and whisk it up in a bowl. Here’s what you need (see recipe below for quantities):

  • Sour cream or Greek yogurt + mayonnaise (see notes below)
  • lime juice and zest
  • Hot sauce (we love the Cholula brand)
  • garlic powder
  • Salt

All you have to do is mix them in a bowl: no chopping or mixing! This is our idea of a simple sauce.

Fish Taco Sauce

Use sour cream or Greek yogurt + mayonnaise!

This fish taco sauce comes in two variations: you can make it with sour cream or you can use Greek yogurt + mayonnaise. Here’s what you need to know about these variations:

  • Sour Cream Sauce: This sauce is rich and creamy. It’s a little creamier than the option below, which has a tastier mayonnaise flavor.
  • Equal parts Greek yogurt + mayonnaise: It’s our favorite way to make a mayonnaise-based sauce with fewer calories! This results in a super creamy and flavorful sauce that isn’t as rich as plain mayonnaise. (We use this philosophy in our amazing homemade ranch and caesar dressings.)

How to make it dairy free

Need a dairy-free fish taco sauce? No problem. You can replace the ½ cup sour cream in this recipe with:

  • Vegan Mayonnaise: It’s easy to find vegan mayonnaise in grocery stores and online
  • Cashew cream: Make a batch of cashew cream and use that instead.
  • Vegan Sour Cream: Another option is this vegan sour cream, also with cashew nuts.
