The word “mudslide” might make you think of milkshake-style alcoholic cocktails at chain restaurants. But have you ever had one classic Landslide? Nothing could be more sophisticated… and delicious! You can prepare this mudslide recipe either way: First, as the drink was originally intended: shaken with coffee liqueur and Irish cream and served in a cocktail glass. It’s more than a glorified milkshake: it’s classy and full of intrigue! Of course you can also prepare it frozen: mix it with vanilla ice cream. Here’s how to do a landslide…both ways!

What is a landslide?

The Mudslide cocktail is a dessert cocktail made with Kahlua and Irish Cream, a variation of White Russian. It was invented in the mid-1970s on the island of Grand Cayman at a bar called the Wreck Bar. The story goes that a customer ordered a White Russian, but the bar didn’t have any cream. They happened to have Irish Cream in stock so they used that instead and the Mudslide was born! This drink was later developed to be mixed with ice cream and became popular in chain restaurants, where it’s more like a moist milkshake. This type of cocktail is called “Frozen Mudflow”.

What are the ingredients of the classic Mudslide drink? How do you make the frozen version? Here’s what you need:

• vodka
• Coffee Liqueur
• Irish cream
• whipped cream (classic) or Vanilla Ice Cream and Ice Cream (frozen)

How to make a mudslide: 2 ways!

As house cocktail connoisseurs, we naturally love the classic mudslide! But if you want to make a frozen mudslide (i.e. an alcoholic milkshake), we probably can’t stop you. Here’s what you need to do for each variant:

• Classic Mud Slide: Place the vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream and heavy cream in a cocktail shaker. Shake until cool, then strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with chocolate shavings.
• Frozen Mudslide: Place the vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream, vanilla ice cream and ice in a blender. Blend until smooth and pour into a glass. Adopt 90’s style and decorate the inside of your glass with chocolate syrup.

Use any coffee liqueur like Kahlua

You can use any type of coffee liquor for a mudslide. The most popular species is Kahlua. But what is it actually? Here’s what you should know about this coffee liqueur and the other types you can use:

• Double is a coffee liqueur made in Mexico: It is made from rum, sugar and coffee (no dairy products!). It contains caffeine but only about 25% of the same amount of coffee.
• How much is Kahlua? A large 750ml bottle costs around $15-$20.
• What to use instead of Kahlua? Try other coffee liqueurs like Tia Maria or Sheridan’s.
• What other cocktails does Kahlua use? Use it to brew other Kahlua drinks like White Russian, Black Russian, B-52, Mind Eraser, Colorado Bulldog, or Espresso Martini.

Use any Irish Cream

The other element needed in a landslide? Irish Cream! Irish Cream is a liqueur made from Irish whiskey and cream.
