Chocolate Covered Frozen Bananas are the perfect easy and healthy dessert! Keep them in the freezer when you’re craving a sweet bite.

Chocolate covered bananas

Here’s our new favorite treat that’s easy, healthy, and super delicious: Chocolate covered bananas! We know that this concept is neither new nor revolutionary. But man, is this perfect for those sweet treat cravings! The crunch of a crunchy dark chocolate shell around a glazed banana is magical. This is new for us: make small banana bites with chocolate coating! It gives you a healthy treat in the freezer whenever you have a chocolate craving. Surprisingly, this little bite is as satisfying as a real chocolate dessert.

How to make Chocolate Covered Bananas

My sister recently told us she stocked up on frozen chocolate covered banana chunks from the store. Try them and then make your own recipe! she urged us. We grabbed a box and agreed: This is perfection! Dark chocolate and glazed banana are the ultimate treat and a perfect healthy snack for kids too. The bite size of this is much more satisfying than a large frozen banana on a stick. Here are the basic steps to making homemade chocolate covered bananas:

  • Cut the bananas into 1/4 inch rounds and freeze. Freezing for 45 minutes turns them into a kind of banana ice cream.
  • melt chocolate. We like to use a water bath method (more on that below), or you can use your microwave.
  • Dip and cover. Use a glass or measuring cup for easier dipping. It makes sense to have 2 people for this part: one to dip and one to cover, as the chocolate will harden immediately.
  • Freeze again! Another 30 minutes in the freezer froze them perfectly! Then you can store them in a container for up to 1 month.

Tips for melting chocolate

Melting chocolate for frozen chocolate covered bananas may seem easy. But working with chocolate is easy to screw up! Chocolate can stick if it contains liquid or if you overheat it. Here are a few things you should know about melted chocolate:

  • Use the “water bath” method. Our favorite method is to bring water to a simmer, then place a heatproof bowl or glass in the simmering water and stir. Only use heating pads and do not splash water! With this method, you can leave the chocolate shell in lukewarm water to keep it hot during the dipping process.
  • Or use the microwave. It works too! Sometimes we accidentally overheat chocolate this way, so we tend to avoid it. Melt it in a liquid measuring cup, heat for about 30 seconds, then stir several times until the chocolate melts.
  • Use a large glass or measuring cup for dipping. It’s easier to have a large chocolate bath to dip the bites into. So a tall pot is better than a shallow bowl.

Point: You can also use this method to make Chocolate Covered Strawberries or Chocolate Covered Almonds!

Chocolate Covered Frozen Banana Toppings

Melting the chocolate is the only tricky part of chocolate covered bananas. Otherwise, it’s easy: dip the banana on a fork, shake off excess chocolate, and place back on the parchment. Then add the toppings right away, because the chocolate hardens quickly! Toppings are of course optional. But they add an extra festive layer! Here’s what we used and a few other ideas:

  • Chopped Peanuts: Crush them very finely so that they have the texture of confetti
  • Ground pistachios: We love the festive green color
  • Other crushed nuts or seeds: such as pecans, hazelnuts or pumpkin seeds
  • All Natural Sprinkles: If you can, find a naturally colored brand like these vermicelli: They’re tinted with plant-based colors like beetroot and spirulina
  • grated coconut
  • shavings or pieces of chocolate
  • Freeze-dried strawberries or raspberries

storage information

Once your chocolate covered bananas are completely frozen, you can place them in a freezer safe container. Here’s the best part: just keep them in the freezer for when you get a chocolate craving! Homemade chocolate banana bites should keep frozen for about 1 month. Of course, they’ll probably never last that long!

Let us know what you think of this treat! It’s a great healthy dessert for kids, and they can help with the topping too. Our 3 year old son loved it! And we rarely feel bad about letting him eat another bite of banana.

The description

Chocolate Covered Frozen Bananas are the perfect easy and healthy dessert! Keep them in the freezer when you’re craving a sweet bite.

  • 2 medium-ripe bananas
  • 1 ½ cups dark chocolate chips* (5 ounces)
  • 1 tbsp refined coconut oil
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Toppings (optional): 2 tablespoons each of crushed peanuts, crushed pistachios, and natural sprinkles

  1. Freeze bananas (45 minutes): Cut the bananas into 1/4 inch rounds. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for 45 minutes.
  2. Melt chocolate: Start a pot of boiling water. In a glass measuring cup or large wide-mouth jar, place the chocolate, coconut oil, and salt in simmering water. Stir the chocolate very gently until it melts, holding the jar in place with a heating pad or gloves. Don’t splash water or the chocolate will burst. (You can also microwave the chocolate in a liquid measuring cup, heat for about 30 seconds, and then stir several times until the chocolate melts.)
  3. Dip and garnish bananas: Make sure your toppings are ready when you use them. Leave the pot in the water bath to keep the chocolate warm. Using a fork, dip each banana slice into the jar, then shake off the excess chocolate. Place the slice on the parchment-lined baking sheet and gently push the banana out with your finger. Add toppings right away (chocolate freezes quickly) – this process is easiest with 2 people, 1 person dip and 1 person fill. This recipe only uses 1 cup of chocolate for the bananas, but it’s nice to have extra chocolate to help with the dipping. You can dip or discard pretzels or granola in the remaining chocolate.
  4. Freeze: Place the bananas back in the freezer and freeze for 30 minutes. Then place the banana pieces in a freezer-safe container. Store up to 1 month.

Remarks

*Recipe only uses about 1 cup, but you’ll need the extra portion to ease the soaking process. Find additional items to dip in the remaining chocolate if needed (like pretzels, granola, etc.).
