Healthy Chocolate Smoothie

Being sick is the worst, isn’t it? We have just come back from an illness that has left us completely bedridden for the past few days. THE WORST. Fortunately, since Alex, Larson and I eat whole foods, we don’t get sick too often! This blueberry smoothie is neither a cure for disease nor an elixir of health. BUT: There is one way to heal candy cravings with nutrient-dense fruits: blueberries and bananas. You could call it a chocolate banana smoothie, a chocolate blueberry smoothie, or a healthy chocolate smoothie: whatever it is, it’s delicious!

How to make this Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie

OK, call us crazy. We don’t often post smoothies on this site because…well, we’re bad at making smoothies. Yes, kidding! For some reason we have a really hard time finding a smoothie recipe that we like. Most of them were either too bitter, too sweet, too thick, or too thin. Following a recipe didn’t work, and throwing random smoothie-style ingredients into a blender didn’t work. Does anyone else have this problem?

Last year we finally found a great smoothie recipe: our Glowing Green Smoothie. The spiciness is balanced with sweetness, and it has a fluffy but creamy texture that’s easy to drink and a bright, vibrant green color. Yummy.

A year later, we finally have a delicious new smoothie to add to the mix: this Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie! It’s extremely easy to make in a blender and uses ingredients we usually have on hand. Sometimes I get smoothie recipes that call for a frozen banana (I never remember doing that!), so in this one it just calls for a regular banana. Then add frozen blueberries (keep handy for cravings), cocoa powder, maple syrup, and vanilla. Stir it up and you have a dark purple drink that tastes a bit like a healthy chocolate smoothie.

I made them for me and Larson and he absolutely is How The. As in, won’t let go of the adored straw! I think we found a winner.

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • ½ cup almond milk (or cow’s milk)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Cut banana into pieces. Place all ingredients in a blender and blend over high heat until combined.
