Who craves chocolate on a regular basis? (Me!) Here’s a way to get your chocolate fix and eat something healthy at the same time. Try one Chocolate Banana Smoothie! This smoothie is packed with good ingredients but tastes like a healthy chocolate milkshake. It’s just sweet enough to feel like a treat, but not so sweet that it looks like dessert. Bananas, cocoa powder and Greek yoghurt work their magic in a blender with just a little maple syrup as a sweetener. This recipe is perfect when I’m craving something delicious… and our son Larson thinks it’s real ice cream! Here’s what you need to know to prepare this smoothie.
Ingredients of the Best Chocolate Banana Smoothie
There’s not a whole lot to this Chocolate Banana Smoothie. In fact, we designed it around ingredients we always have in our pantry and fridge. Here’s what you need to have on hand:
- Bananas: Here’s the best part: no freezing necessary! You can use bananas at room temperature. You just need lots of ice to get the perfect creamy texture.
- Greek yogurt: We love adding Greek yogurt to smoothies because it’s high in protein and contains probiotics for a healthy gut. You can skip this if you want a vegan smoothie.
- Milk: You can use any type of milk here, dairy or non-dairy. Add more plant-based milk for vegans.
- cocoa powder: That’s what the chocolate does with the sweetener.
- maple syrup: Maple syrup is our favorite sweetener. You can also use honey or agave syrup.
- Ice: Add a little ice and it all turns into a creamy and chocolaty puree.

Boost protein with supplements (like peanut butter!)
Want to add some extra protein to your banana chocolate smoothie? Here are our top picks, both plant-based and dairy-based:
- Peanut butter: What could be a better pairing? Peanut butter goes hand-in-hand with chocolate and banana. It also adds a touch of plant-based protein. Try 1-2 tbsp. Keep in mind that the peanut butter increases the calories but also makes this smoothie more filling.
- More Greek Yogurt: Double the amount of Greek yogurt in this recipe for an even more filling smoothie. This is great for breakfast or post-workout snacks.
- Protein powder: You can always hide protein powder in smoothies! In general, we prefer not to come here as the taste can leave a strange aftertaste. But this smoothie would be a great way to hide the protein powder from any of our smoothie recipes as the chocolate can coat it.

Variant: vegan chocolate banana smoothie
Do you prefer a vegan smoothie? You can easily make this plant-based chocolate banana smoothie by doing the following:
- Slicing Greek yogurt
- Use oat milk or almond milkAdd a little more as needed until blended
- Remember to add peanut butter for the addition of vegetable proteins
Variation: Dark Chocolate Banana Smoothie
Are you a dark chocolate lover like me? Here’s what you can do to make a Dark Chocolate Banana Smoothie: use Dutch cocoa powder (sometimes referred to as dark cocoa powder or dutch cocoa). Dutch cocoa powder is essentially like a dark chocolate version of cocoa powder. It has been treated with an alkali to make it pH neutral, giving it a darker color and milder taste. We use it in many of our recipes to achieve a rich chocolate flavor such as: B. flourless chocolate cake and chocolate banana muffins.
In this recipe, start with 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder hollandaise and add more as you like. You may also need to add a little more sweetener to combat the cocoa darkness.
