Cherry smoothie

Cherries aren’t an ordinary fruit in smoothies…but we think they should be. Try this frosty one Cherry smoothie! It’s fruity and sweet, with a big cherry flavor that contrasts with hints of vanilla and cinnamon. Of course, it’s more common to make smoothies with good old strawberries and blueberries. But if you can find a bag of frozen cherries: grab them for this tasty mush!

Ingredients in a cherry smoothie

Packed with sweet flavor, this cherry smoothie requires only a few ingredients, some of which you may already have on hand. The key ingredient, of course, is frozen cherries! Check the frozen section of your local grocery store (they can sometimes be hard to find). Here’s what you need overall:

  • Frozen Cherries: We used sweet, but you can use frozen tart cherries if you can find them!
  • banana
  • greek yogurt
  • orange juiceor substitute cherry juice if you have it on hand
  • vanilla extract
  • maple syrup
  • Cinammon
  • Ice

Blend them together and you have a beautiful pink puree: perfect for sipping and full of healthy ingredients. For a dairy-free smoothie, omit the Greek yogurt and add one of the protein supplements below (you may need to add a little more liquid to mix it).

Variation: Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

This cherry smoothie is infused with vanilla extract because cherries and vanilla go together. But what about cherries and…chocolate? Here’s one way to make a smoothie that tastes like a healthy chocolate milkshake:

  • Add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to the recipe below
  • Sweeten with 1 to 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or honey

Ways to add protein

This cherry smoothie has a little bit of Greek yogurt for a bit of protein and a creamy texture. But you can still add more protein, especially if you’re using it as a meal replacement. Here are some options:

  • More Greek yogurt. Go up to ½ cup or even more to taste.
  • Almond butter or cashew butter. Add 1 tablespoon of nut butter for an additional 4 grams of protein.
  • Chia seeds. You can add plant-based protein and fiber to chia seeds: 2 tablespoons of chia seeds add 4 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber.
  • Vanilla or Chocolate Protein Powder: Protein powder works well too! We use this protein powder with natural ingredients and not too artificial taste.
