Show of hands: Who celebrates Valentine’s Day? From a young age, my family celebrated Valentine’s Day as a celebration of love of all kinds, especially love for family and friends. My mom surprised my sister and I with pink and red balloons, and my grandmother sent me packages full of Valentine’s Day decorations while I was in college. And honestly, in this world of conflict, strife and hate, who doesn’t need another day to celebrate love? Or another excuse for a special meal? (Or maybe it was just made up for those of us in the Midwest to spend the winter…) Anyway, these Cherry Goat Cheese Crostini are the perfect winter’s appetizer for this holiday; Read on for the recipe!

How to make Cherry Goat Cheese Crostini

Alex and I like to use this time of year to think of special meals to eat with loved ones. This is a super easy winter appetizer with a combination of sweet and savory to die for: tart cherries and cheese. We took dried Montmorency cherries and cooked them with some balsamic vinegar into a sweet and sour compote, which we then poured over goat’s cheese crostini and garnished with a few sprinkles of fresh sage. Easy to make for guests or for a date night, it’s suitable for occasions from Valentine’s Day to New Year’s Eve.

What are Montmorency tart cherries?

Montmorency tart cherries are grown primarily in small family orchards in the United States and Canada and are available year-round in dried, frozen, and juice forms in grocery stores and online. We love them for their taste, but they’re also nutritious, with health benefits ranging from inflammation and physical recovery to sleep.

It’s a great snack as they can satisfy sweet tooth cravings – you can eat them on their own straight from the can (our favourite!) or combine them with nuts or seeds, making them a fantastic combination of fiber and protein.
