Do you have a bottle of Buchanan’s Blended Scotch? Here’s our favorite way to use it in a cocktail: mix it up in a whiskey sour! This Buchanan drink is full of contrasts: it is crunchy and sweet at the beginning of the sip. But wait that split second for the finish: it’s smoky and peaty like any whiskey sour you’ve ever tasted! Most Scotch is drunk neat, but this is our favorite way of making it an irresistibly interesting drink.
Ingredients of this Buchanan drink
Buchanan Sour is simply a whiskey sour blended with Buchanan’s Scotch. The whiskey sour is an iconic classic cocktail that dates back centuries: it was first mentioned in a cocktail book in the 1870s! Typically, a bourbon or rye whiskey is used for this cocktail: but you can also make it with scotch whiskey! Here’s what you need:
- Buchanan Deluxe Blended Scotch
- lemon juice
- simple syrup or maple syrup
All you have to do? Shake these ingredients in a shaker filled with ice, then strain into a lowball glass. Take a sip and the taste is deliciously sweet, with a hint of peat smoke on the finish. Too simple? There are two ways to dress up the Buchanan drink if you want: read on.

Add an egg white if you like!
Do you like a classic protein cocktail? Dress this buchanan drink in a protein mousse! It’s a classic way to add a frothy garnish and creamy texture to a cocktail. To do this with an egg white you need to use a technique called shake dry where you first shake all the ingredients without ice. Go to Whiskey Sour with Egg White or follow the steps below:
- Shake the ingredients without ice. Pour all ingredients into a shaker except Ice. Shake for 15 seconds.
- Add ice and shake! Add ice and shake for 30 seconds. The foam rises!
Serve with clear ice
This Buchanan drink looks great on its own, but another way to spice it up? Use clear ice! It is crystal clear ice that is not cloudy like the ice cube tray type. Cut it into large organic shapes perfect for drinks of any size! Here are two methods of making transparent ice:
- Make homemade clear ice. All you need is a small cooler that fits in your freezer. Go to How to make transparent ice.
- Use a clear ice maker. This transparent ice maker also works well.
