It’s packed with lovely berry flavors that have just the right banana counterbalance. From the first sip we were sold! (Our 3-year-old was also very impressed, which is saying something.) Ingredients of this Blueberry Banana Smoothie

This Blueberry Banana Smoothie is plant-based and full of beautiful, healthy fruit: mixed with a little ice and water! You can also add protein to make it even more filling and nutritious (read on for ideas). Here are the ingredients for this smoothie:

  • Frozen Blueberries: Frozen berries give just the right frozen texture. We love making frozen blueberry smoothies because frozen berries are easy to store to use when the mood hits.
  • Banana: The banana adds a creamy texture and accentuates the sweetness.
  • water and ice: All you need is a little water and ice to get the perfect creamy texture (the banana and berries do all the work).
  • Fresh lemon juice: Citrus fruits enhance the flavors! You can also use fresh lime juice: whatever you have on hand.

How to Add Protein to a Smoothie…Without the Powder!

This Blueberry Banana Smoothie is made with just fruit and water! So if you’re going to use it as a meal (like breakfast) or add protein to your snack, be sure to add a little more to the mix. Here are our favorite ways to add protein…without powder:

  • Greek yogurt: Yogurt adds quite a bit of protein and probiotics for a healthy gut. Try mixing ¼ cup to ½ cup depending on your taste. If necessary, add a few drops of water to mix well. Note that this will lighten the color to a lighter lavender depending on how much you add.
  • almond or cashew butter. Almond butter or cashew butter work better here than peanut butter. Use about 1 tbsp, 2 for a stronger flavor. This addition dulls the color a bit, so keep that in mind as well.

flavor variations!

This Blueberry Banana Smoothie tastes amazing just the way it is. But if you want, you can add a flavor nuance. Here are some additional supplements we recommend:

  • Ginger. Add ½ teaspoon grated ginger to the mixture for a flavorful burst.
  • mint or basil. Add a few fresh mint or basil leaves for an herbal touch.
  • Lime. Substitute 2 tablespoons of lime for the lemon for a stronger citrus note.
  • Coconut. Use coconut milk instead of water. Or add a handful of coconut (or toasted coconut) to the mix.
  • Vanilla. Use ¼ to ½ teaspoon vanilla to add complexity.
  • cinnamon or cardamom. Add ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon for a unique twist.
  • mango or pineapple. Substitute 1 cup of frozen mangoes or peaches for 1 cup of frozen berries. It will also vary slightly in color.

Smoothie Storage

Smoothies are best consumed immediately. But this banana blueberry smoothie can last up to 1 day in the fridge if stored in a sealed container or mason jar with a lid. It gets very thick so just shake it before drinking.
