Black bean and corn salsa

Sometimes Alex and I meet someone in real life who knows us from our online work. They will say something like I know all about your life, is it scary? what I answer not creepy at all! In the age of social media, many of us know intimate details of people we’ve never met, like the avocado toast they just devoured or the lace-up shoes they’re wearing. For a meeting. It’s normal these days to share parts of our soul depths with total strangers.

The scourge of this over-sharing culture is that our minds are stuffed with mundane information about people we don’t know. The good: We can learn from each other and feel a sense of community as we navigate through life. Read on to learn more about the pros and cons of social media as it relates to this black bean and corn salsa recipe.

While many people choose to focus on the evil of technology (our brains are rotting! we are all addicted!), it has been a force for good for Alex and I over the last few years. Going through miscarriage, cancer and the adoption process was a lot easier knowing there are others who have walked this path before us.

After sharing Larson’s adoption story online, we were connected to a huge family of adopted children, birth mothers, and adoptive families who were connecting and sharing their stories. As we speak, we are going through various stages of the adoption journey with some of these virtual friends.

I recently learned that after hearing Larson’s story, one of our virtual friends was inspired to find her birth mother. After living into adulthood without knowing anything about her birth mother, she has found her and will be meeting again in person in a few weeks! For me, it’s the power of technology: creating community, empathy, and vulnerability in the human experience.. And in return, I will endure the “evil” inherent in this web connecting us in order to experience it.

I was playing the piano with Larson the other day. I played him a Chopin waltz; he pulled out something terrible. And I realized that life, like a piano, consists of white and black keys. If you want, you can learn how to create beauty with these buttons by pressing them in the perfect order. Or if you prefer, you can smack it and create something terrifying. Same keys; different actions. And so it is with technology: while it can be used for terrible things, why not use the same raw materials to create something beautiful?

You choose.
