1. Cashew butter or almond butter

The best substitute for tahini? Cashew butter or almond butter. These nut butters are similar in texture to tahini and fairly bland in flavor. Some people claim you can use peanut butter as a substitute, but we prefer the more neutral flavors of cashew and almond butters. You don’t have but you have nuts? Make homemade cashew butter or homemade almond butter. This substitute works in many recipes like hummus, cookies, etc.

3. In a pinch: Peanut Butter + Olive Oil (Hummus)

Substitute half the tahini for peanut butter and the other half for olive oil. It’s not perfect, but it does the trick at a dead end.

  • 1 medium clove of garlic
  • 2 15 ounces canned chickpeas
  • 1 large lemon (¼ cup lemon juice)
  • ¼ cup Aquafaba or water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter

  1. Peel the garlic. Drain the chickpeas into a liquid measuring cup and reserve the aquafaba (can of liquid chickpeas). Squeeze lemon.
  2. Place the garlic in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. Add chickpeas, lemon juice, aquafaba and olive oil, kosher salt and peanut butter. Blend for a few minutes until very creamy.
