What is the sweet and sour mix?

Sweet and Sour Mix is a lemon and lime flavored mixer used in cocktail recipes. It’s typically used for sour cocktails like Whiskey Sour or Amaretto Sour, but you can also use it for margaritas. The sour mix ratio depends on the author of the recipe. We like our drinks on the acidic side, so we adjusted ours to the perfect level of acidity. Here is the acid mix ratio:

  • 1 part sugar
  • 1 part water
  • 1 part lime juice
  • 2 parts lemon juice

Tips for preparing a sweet and sour mix

There is very little to know about preparing a sweet and sour mix! Here’s what to do:

  • Squeeze limes and lemons. It sounds easy, but that’s what takes the most time in this recipe. Use a good juicer to get this done quickly. Here is the juicer we use: it works very well.
  • Heat citrus juice, water and sugar until dissolved. You hardly need to heat the mixture! Simply heat and beat constantly until the sugar dissolves.
  • Cool to room temperature. This only takes a few minutes.

Storage of sour mixtures

Once you’ve made your sweet and sour mix, you can use it to mix drinks right away. Or you can save it! Here’s what to remember: Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. The sparkling mixture tastes best right away! But you will not notice any significant difference after 1 week. Once you hit the week mark, you’ll find that the flavor begins to fade. Drink it as close as possible!

We love making a big batch of this flavorful concoction for the holidays. It’s perfect for a trip to the beach or to a lake house or even poolside entertainment!
