The level of spiciness in this spicy margarita recipe

Excellent question. You can customize it to your liking! Here are some notes on the heat level:

  • 3 to 4 thin slices of jalapeno pepper make a medium-hot drink. So use 1-2 for subtle heat and more if you want to blast your face. (Try this at your own risk!)
  • Keep in mind that jalapeno peppers can vary in spice level. So play it safe: you can taste and add some more after shaking it in the shaker.
  • Remove the seeds or leave them in. Alex and I liked the spiciness of 3 slices with the seeds, but we like spicy food: use that as a guide!
  • The spice is sweeter than when eaten. You’ll find that drinking your spices is easier to manage than eating them.

What is the best tequila for margaritas?

Many people use tequila blanco for margaritas. But Alex and I prefer the robust flavor of Tequila Reposado; it adds another nuance to the taste. What is the difference?

  • Tequila blanco (or “new” tequila) has been matured for less than 2 months and has a strong, clean flavor.
  • Tequila reposado (“rested” in Spanish) ages longer, from 2 to 12 months. It has a more nuanced flavor with hints of oak and vanilla.

In any case, try to find one Mid-range tequila in preparing this flavorful margarita recipe. You can definitely taste the difference!
