Rose Sangria

There is red sangria and white sangria… so why not Rose Sangria? So light and refreshing, so full of fruity and delicate flavors, this rosé wine sangria tops our list of favorites. It’s perfect for summer entertainment, whether it’s a lazy afternoon, a pool party, a lake house, or a drink with dinner. Sangria is often made with too much sugar or unconventional ingredients like ginger ale. This recipe will show you how to make Rose Sangria: Spanish Style! This results in a delicate, nuanced flavor that’s just sweet enough and leaves you wanting more.

Ingredients for the rose sangria

Sangria is a traditional wine punch originating in Spain. The classic version is red sangria, which is made with red wine and chopped fruit, and often orange juice or brandy. There is also white sangria made with white wine. So even if it’s a little less standard: why not try it with rosé wine? As with many popular recipes, there are many variations on the theme when it comes to ingredients. Here are the ingredients for this rose sangria:

  • Fruit: orange, lemon and strawberries
  • Sugar
  • Rose wine
  • brandy
  • sparkling waterOptional
  • Mint, for garnish

How to make Rose Sangria (Spanish style).

Rose sangria isn’t often served in Spain, but it’s a traditional twist on white sangria. This method is inspired by our favorite Spanish chef, Jose Andres. Chef Andres is from Spain and has opened many successful restaurants here in the US (and is a Nobel Prize nominee for that humanitarian work!). The “Spanish” way of preparing sangria recommended by Chef Jose is as follows:

  • Macerate the fruit for 20 minutes: Mix the sangria fruit with the sugar and let it macerate or stand at room temperature and break down. This allows the fruit aromas to penetrate the wine even better.
  • Add liquids: Add rose wine and cognac. Throw in a few lemon slices.
  • Refrigerate for 1 to 4 hours. This allows the flavors to mix and unfold.

like that ! It’s ready to serve: a refreshing and unique sangria recipe that you’ll want to repeat all summer long.

Tip: Don’t do more than 4 hours in advance

Once you’ve mixed your batch of rose sangria, let it sit in the fridge to let the flavors blend. The minimum time for this step is 1 hour. But there is a maximum cooling time: we do not recommend anything longer than 4 hours! The fruit will become mushy and lose color, and the flavors will fade somewhat. It is therefore not a drink that should be prepared in advance: prepare it about an hour before you plan to drink it!

In Spain it is also customary to top up your glass with some sparkling water. This adds a bubbly fizz that makes it even more refreshing! Serve your sangria right away, making sure to include a healthy serving of fruit in each glass for garnish. We like to add a few ice cubes and then top up the glass with sparkling water. (Please don’t add sprite or ginger ale to this wine cocktail: promise?)

Eat the fruit as you serve!

Another tip we picked up from Chef Andres is this one: don’t let the fruit go to waste! Serve sangria with skewers. Have your guests eat the rest of the fruit marinated in wine in their drink with the skewers. It is a perfect “dessert” or refreshment for the palate after a meal.

Cognac versus Grand Marnier

For the other spirits in this rose sangria, you can use brandy or Grand Marnier. There are many types of brandy: use whatever brandy you have on hand. Cognac is a fancy brandy if you have it (we have it to make the classic sidecar). Grand Marnier is a blend of brandy and orange liqueur: this gives it a high-end touch. (If you have a bottle of Grand Marnier, try that in a Cadillac Margarita, too.)

  • 1 a handful of mint leaves
  • 1/2 Lemon, sliced

  1. Chop the orange (without the peel). Slice the strawberries. Place both in the bottom of a pitcher, sprinkle with sugar and stir. Leave to rest at room temperature for 20 minutes.
  2. After 20 minutes, pour in the rosé wine and cognac. Add fresh mint and lemon slices. Stir and refrigerate for 1 to 4 hours. (Do not exceed 4 hours or the texture of the fruit will begin to degrade.)
