What is margarita salt?

Margarita salt is the salt that is added to the rim of a margarita glass. Why is a margarita served with salt? Well, the salt intensifies the sweet and sour taste of the drink. This makes the acid lighter, which makes the overall drinking experience even more pleasant.

There are many brands of store-bought margarita salt. But why buy it yourself when you can do it at home? It’s super easy to make and you don’t have half-used containers lying around.

How to make margarita salt

This recipe couldn’t be easier (literally). To make margarita salt:

  1. Place the kosher salt, lime zest, and orange zest on a cutting board. (Scroll down to recipe for exact amounts).
  2. Crush them together with a rolling pin.

That’s it! Well, some recipes call for oven drying citrus peels or other fancy things. During our testing, we found that this isn’t necessary: it really is that simple. Store your margarita salt in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month. (It will probably take longer; we’re conservative here.)

How to make the perfect margarita salt rim

You might think that making a margarita salt crust doesn’t come with tips and tricks: but as with everything in food and drink, it does! Here are our tips for designing the perfect rim:

  1. Spread the salt in an even layer on a plate.
  2. Take a lime wedge and cut a notch in the middle: then slide it around the rim of the glass. This will perfectly wet the edge of the glass without having to use your fingers!
  3. To rim the glass, you want the salt only on the outside of the glass, not on the inside where it can fall into the drink. To do this, tilt the glass so that only the outer edge goes into the salt.
  4. Shake out loose salt in the sink.

What Kind of Salt is Best for a Margarita?

The best type of salt for a margarita that we’ve found is kosher salt. We like the size of the grains and the flavor they bring. If you want to use sea salt for this recipe, you can do that too. Don’t forget to use iodized table salt though! The flavor of this type of salt is far too intense to glaze your drinks.
