What is an Irish mule?

The Irish Mule is a whiskey-based version of the Moscow Mule, a classic cocktail invented in the 1940s. When it was invented, this drink may have been a ploy to sell vodka, ginger beer, and copper mugs. (Read more here.) Mule is part of a family of cocktails called Bucks: drinks made with ginger beer or beer, citrus juice, and liqueur. So a Moscow mule is a dollar of vodka, and an Irish mule is a dollar of whiskey!

The Moscow Mule is such a classic that it’s on the International Bartender Association’s official IBA cocktail list, meaning it has an ‘official’ definition. Swap Irish Whiskey for Vodka to get the Irish version! The ingredients of an Irish Mule are:

How to Make an Irish Mule (Basic Steps)

Making an Irish Mule is as simple as pouring three ingredients into a glass: no technique or skill is really required. All you have to do is squeeze a lime: then pour! Here’s what to do:

  1. Pay ¼ cup Irish whiskey, 1 tablespoon lime juice, And ½ cup ginger beer in a copper mug or serving glass of your choice.
  2. Add ice and garnish with lime. Do!

You can use any brand Irish whiskey for an Irish mule. The beauty of a mule is that there’s no need for top-shelf alcohol. Since ginger beer and lime are strong enough, you can get away with budget alcohol. We used Jameson Irish Whiskey, one of the most well-known brands, but feel free to use your favorite brand. And use leftovers with those great Irish whiskey cocktails, like Irish coffee or an Irish sour.

Serve this Irish mule in a copper mug… or not!

When you order a mule at a restaurant or bar, it is usually served in a copper mug. You can of course serve it in any glass! It’s still an Irish mule. But a solid copper mug is ideal for two reasons:

  • Drinking iced copper brings with it another sensory element. The copper turns icy with the drink, adding another sensory element to a sip. You can really feel the difference!
  • Tradition! In the 1940s, the drink was originally served in copper. People in Hollywood fell in love with him, and everyone across the country saw pictures of celebrities drinking mules from copper cups. It caught on and is still the traditional way to drink this cocktail.
