It’s easy to make and only requires a few ingredients to prepare. Icing on the cake, it’s so, so good: apply it to all your desserts throughout the season! OK! Let’s talk whipped cream for a moment. Alex, Larson, and I eat a lot of plant-based recipes at our house. We also eat dairy and some seafood and sometimes a little meat. So our whipped cream recipe is this homemade whipped cream recipe. And if we want a healthy spin, then we opt for our yoghurt whipped cream recipe, also very tasty but with half Greek yoghurt. But if you fancy going entirely plant-based, and if you’re serving people who are, use this coconut whipped cream! It is light and fluffy, slightly sweet and resembles “normal” whipped cream.

What does dairy-free whipped cream taste like? Well, it has a coconut vibe (so if you’re not a coconut guy, stay away). But we think it adds just the right flavor complexity! I hardly notice the coconut taste, but maybe that’s because I’ve gotten used to it. How to Make Coconut Whipped Cream: It takes a little thought, but other than that it’s a breeze!

How to make dairy-free whipped cream

  1. Refrigerate a can of regular coconut milk overnight. This allows the coconut cream to separate from the liquid.
  2. Open the box and remove the coconut cream from the top. Place in the bowl of a stand mixer (or use a bowl and electric mixer).
  3. Add maple or agave syrup and vanilla.
  4. Beat over high heat until fluffy and whipped.

As you can see, the only “hard” part really is remembering to refrigerate the coconut milk. Alex and I actually keep a few cans of coconut milk in the fridge so we’re always ready to go. You never know when a guest will stop by for dessert!

Can you now make coconut cream whipped cream using store-bought coconut cream instead of milk? In fact, you can, but since the amount of liquid to firm coconut is different than coconut milk, you’ll have to play around with the amounts by ear.   • 151 ounce coconut milk (chilled overnight)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup or agave syrup
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract*

  1. Chill the coconut milk overnight (we only keep a few cans in the fridge).
  2. When ready, whip the coconut milk and ladle the hardened coconut cream on top. This will be in the top half of the box; Be careful as the liquid has separated and is on the bottom half of the box.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer (or bowl for use with an electric mixer), add just the hardened coconut cream; Discard the coconut juice or use it in another recipe. Add maple syrup and vanilla extract.
  4. Attach the whisk attachment to your blender and blend on high power for 1-2 minutes until light and fluffy, scraping down the bowl and blending again as needed.
