What’s in a Chocolate Martini?

The vodka martini is as far removed from a classic dry martini as it gets. In fact, it’s ironic that vodka martinis even have that name! The Classic Martini is simply a gin and a vermouth: it’s as dry as can be. You can also make a vodka version of the classic, but a family of sweet and fruity vodka martinis began to gain popularity in the 1990s. There’s really no resemblance to the original martini, so it’s just a fun excuse to make a vodka mixed drink!

Chocolate martini is a concept all bartenders refer to, so there’s no “official” definition like lemon martini or espresso martini. Here’s what we put into our chocolate martini recipe:

  • vodka
  • Irish cream (as Bailey’s)
  • cocoa cream
  • whipped cream
  • simple syrup
  • cocoa powder

cocoa cream

What is cocoa cream?

Creme de cacao might not be something you typically keep in your liquor cabinet. It’s best known for its use in Brandy Alexander and Grasshopper, but it’s also commonly used in a chocolate martini! Here is a little more about this liqueur specialty:

  • cocoa cream is a cocoa bean flavored liqueur available in white (light) and dark varieties. It has a long history: It is perhaps one of the first alcoholic beverages, made by monks in the 17th century after cocoa beans were brought to Europe from America (source).
  • How does cocoa cream taste? White Creme de Cacao, the clear variety, tastes like milk chocolate with a hint of vanilla.
  • How much is cocoa cream A 750ml bottle costs between $10 and $20.
  • Is it worth buying? Yes, if you like sweet cocktails! You can prepare crème de cacao drinks like Brandy Alexander, Grasshopper or Bushwacker.

Irish Cream is a liqueur made from Irish whiskey and cream. The most popular Irish Cream is Baileys, but there are other brands of Irish Cream (we used a different brand for this recipe). The most popular Irish cream cocktail is the Mudslide, itself a twist on the classic creamy White Russian.
