Good summer! We’re up to our ears on basil (we have 4 plants this year) and wanted to share a fun and easy recipe to use up some of that basil. Pesto is an obvious choice for basil, but what about neon green basil oil? It’s easy to put together, easier and cheaper than pesto, and darn delicious. How is basil oil made?

How to make basil oil

The basic concept is: blanch the basil by boiling it for just 1 minute. Then plunge it in ice water to stop the cooking and keep that nice green color. After squeezing out all the water, mix the basil with the olive oil. The result is a wonderful green-green sauce that tastes like summer. For the full recipe, scroll down to the recipe card below!

When it comes to making basil oil, the quality of the ingredients matters. Premium olive oil is a must! If you’ve been listening to our podcast, you might remember Episode 17 where we had an olive oil tasting with an expert from California Olive Ranch. Basil oil is magical in flavoring the oil, so be sure to use the best quality olive oil you can find. For us, quick and easy non-recipes like this basil oil are part of summer. We picked the best heirloom tomatoes we could find and brushed them with basil oil, which was visually stunning and perfect for a patio party appetizer. Enjoy and let us know if you try it!

This Light Green Basil Oil Drizzle is quick and easy and perfect for drizzling over fresh veggies, eggs, or chips. How is basil oil made?


  • 1 cup Packed basil leaves
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ⅛ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper

  1. Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Prepare a bowl of ice water.
  2. Remove the basil leaves from the stalk and wash them; Measure out 1 cup of wrapped leaves (make sure to fill cup for best flavor). Once the water is boiling, add the basil and cook for 1 minute. Immediately turn off the heat, remove the basil and plunge into the ice bath.
  3. Once the leaves have cooled, remove them from the water and squeeze out as much water as possible, then pat dry with a paper towel. (At this point the leaves will wilt and shriveled to a very small handful.)
  4. Place the blanched basil, olive oil, salt, and pepper in a blender or in the cup for an immersion blender; mix until completely combined. Taste and add additional salt if desired. Pour into an airtight container. Use immediately or refrigerate for up to 1 week.
