What’s in a Beer Margarita?

As the name suggests, a beer margarita is simply a margarita served with beer. The margarita itself is a classic alcoholic beverage on the International Bartender Association’s list of official IBA cocktails. That means there’s an “official” definition of margarita: Beerita simply adds beer:

  • tequila
  • Cointreau (Orange liqueur)
  • lime juice
  • Beer

It’s true: There’s no added sugar in a margarita! (There’s a small amount in Cointreau.) No need to make this drink disgusting. As mentioned above, most beer margarita recipes call for frozen lemonade concentrate. For our part, we wanted to stick with the classic margarita, so we just added our classic margarita and beer. The taste is so pure, tart and nuanced from the beer: it really is a head length above the rest.

The type of beer for a Beergarita

To make a great beer margarita, you can’t add just any old beer either! There are a few options that we recommend:

  • Use a lager for a classic taste, like Corona since it’s a Mexican beer. Or,
  • Boost Craft IPA! We did that for ours and it really took off. Choose a hoppy IPA with citrus notes.

How to make a beer margarita

There’s not much to do to make your own beegarita! You don’t even have to use a shaker with this one, making it even easier. Here’s what to do:

  1. Rim the glass with salt. The salt enhances the sweet and sour flavors of the drink and gives you that classic margarita taste.
  2. Stir in the serving glass. Take this tequila, this lime juice, and this Cointreau and mix them up in the mixing glass.
  3. Add ice and pour in the beer. Then just pour cold beer! Beer gives this classic drink just the right sparkle.

Salt rim optional!

For a little twist, we left out the salt rim on this beer margarita. (Hey, we have 15+ margaritas and they all have a salty crust!) You don’t need it for the flavor! But if you like the classic salty margarita zing, feel free to add it before you mix up your beergarita.

The best salt for a salt rim? Use kosher salt or flaked sea salt because they have the best texture. But if you want to make it even more festive, try a batch of our Margarita Salt. The green and orange colors of lime and orange zest look beautiful on glass.
