Baked donuts

No need to run to the bakery when you have a craving for donuts. try that Recipe for baked donuts! They’re irresistibly tender, sweet with a chewy crumb and sheer perfection, coated in a rich chocolate glaze. Add some confetti sprinkles and what could be more fun? All you need is a donut pan and a craving for projects. We made these for our son Larson’s birthday celebrations and, needless to say, they were a big hit here (because…donuts!).

What you need for this Baked Donuts recipe

This baked donut recipe requires special equipment…a donut pan! Baked donuts are prepared using a special pan: the batter is more like a cake or cupcake. Traditional yeast donuts are made from yeast dough, cut into circles, and then fried: fun for another day. Aside from the donut pan, the ingredients are simple and you probably already have them in your pantry and fridge. Here’s what you need:

  • donut shape: Here’s a link to the donut molds we used. You can also use a mini donut pan to make mini donuts!
  • piping bag: it is optional but useful; see below
  • Plain Flour
  • granulated sugar
  • Cinammon
  • baking powder and salt
  • egg
  • butter
  • milk
  • Vanilla

Tips for filling the donut pan

The only difficult part of this recipe, aside from finding a donut pan, is pouring the batter into the pan. It may not look hard, but the dough is sticky and it’s too easy to use too! Here are some hints:

  • Don’t overfill the pot! If you add too much batter, the donut hole in the center will be too small and the shape won’t look right. You may feel like you’re not adding enough batter, but remember it puffs up in the oven! Fill the holes about halfway and divide the batter evenly among 12 donuts.
  • The dough will be sticky, so a piping bag will help. Using a piping bag to pour the batter is very helpful in getting the batter neatly into the pan. But not everyone has one! You can use a spoon, but you may have to scoop out the center of the donut hole after adding the batter. (If you want to make mini donuts, a pastry bag is essential.)

Once the batter is in the pan, making donuts is a breeze! Bake them and they will puff up like a charm.

The description

This Baked Donuts recipe is irresistibly delicious! Forget the bakery and make homemade donuts with vanilla or chocolate frosting.

  • 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Cinammon
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the filling: 1 recipe chocolate icing or cinnamon sugar for dusting
  • Pour if desired

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Generously grease two 6-hole donut molds, enough for 12 donuts. (You can also make 24 mini donuts with 2 mini donut pans.)
  3. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and kosher salt. In a medium bowl, beat the egg, then add the milk and vanilla extract, and finally the melted butter. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir with a spoon until just combined (resist the urge to mix too vigorously).
  4. Divide the batter evenly into the 12 donut holes so the holes are half full: be careful not to overfill! The easiest way is to use a piping bag to fill the holes evenly (especially with mini donuts). You can also gently spoon in the batter and then smooth the surface with a spoon or your finger.
  5. Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, 12 to 13 minutes, flipping top and bottom pans halfway through baking. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing from the mold. Remove from the pan (use a knife around the edges if necessary). Place on a wire rack and let cool before freezing.
  6. If you’re making glazed donuts, prepare the chocolate icing in a medium bowl. Dip the donuts in the frosting, turning them as you remove them to allow the excess frosting to drip back into the bowl. Garnish with sprinkles.
  7. Storage Instructions: Store fully cooled donuts at room temperature in a sealed container with the lid open for up to 2 days to prevent soggy. When they start to dry out (or are not glazed) you can close the lid. Freeze unglazed baked donuts in a sealed container for up to 2 months; thaw and bring to room temperature before freezing.
