Almond milk in coffee: the benefits and harm

When it comes to plant milk for coffee, oat milk is the clear favorite. Its creamy texture and milky flavor make it ideal: it also steams and foams like a charm. There are some pros and cons to using almond milk in coffee.

  • The disadvantages: Almond milk has a watery texture that isn’t as creamy as cow’s milk and other non-dairy milks. It doesn’t steam well and doesn’t foam as much as oat milk. It also has a strong nutty flavor that is easily recognized in coffee.
  • Advantages: Almond milk is easy to find in stores. Its nutty flavor can add a nice nuance to coffee beverages when brewed properly. It works in hot coffee, but it’s even better in an iced coffee or iced latte.

Option 1: Prepare coffee with almond milk: Hot Latte

Does almond milk work in a hot latte? Yes! Cold almond milk can curdle in hot coffee. But if you heat it up and froth it before adding it, it makes for a flavorful latte. The flavor is very nutty and not as creamy as a traditional latte, but it’s delicious in its own way. Here are the main steps:

  • Step 1: Prepare a double espresso (See Making Espresso for more information).
  • Step 2: Froth ½ cup of almond milk (See below for details).
  • Step 3: Add 2 teaspoons of espresso sweetener, then pour in the steamed almond milk.

Point: It’s best to add a dash of sweetener when using almond milk in coffee, even if you don’t typically sweeten your coffee beverages. Almond milk has an almost bitter taste compared to milk, which is lighter and sweeter.
