How to prepare an Aeropress espresso! Get closer to reality with this affordable coffee maker.

Espresso Aeropress

Do you have an aeropress? Would you like to make an espresso? You’re lucky. Let’s face it: the Aeropress can’t brew an actual espresso with the bubbly “crema” tip you’d get at your favorite coffee shop. But it does what we will call Espresso Aeropress (brilliant term, right?): a brown liquid that looks a lot like espresso. Drop it as is or use it in espresso drinks like latte macchiato and cappuccino.

Can the Aeropress really make espresso?

The Aeropress is an inexpensive coffee maker that looks like a plastic cylinder. It looks a little spacey, but it makes a great cup of coffee. In fact, it’s our favorite when traveling for a closer taste of a great cup of pourover.

Can the Aeropress really make espresso? Not really. A good espresso has a caramel colored head called crema. There is no way to get a cream with the Aeropress. An aroma in an espresso is much more developed and tastes like a flavor aroma, while Aeropress espresso tastes a bit more bitter and flat.

Is it even worth preparing an Aeropress espresso? Yes! It’s an easy way to make espresso and it tastes great. It’s a great way to brew that extra strong coffee for espresso drinks. The best part? An Aeropress costs around $25 compared to the hundreds of dollars you spend on an espresso machine.

Make sure you have espresso roast coffee!

You can’t really make Aeropress espresso unless you have espresso roast coffee. What is espresso roast coffee? The technical answer is that there is no real definition. The answer from non-coffee nerds is: espresso roast beef is extremely roasted coffee. This gives the best dark, creamy bitterness with every sip.

How to prepare an Aeropress espresso: some tips

Here’s what you should know about making an Aeropress espresso (we almost said Aeropresso, which is actually a great name for something like this). Read these tips first, then move on to the recipe below:

  • Finely grind your coffee. Instead of a medium grind for a regular cup of coffee, you need a fine grind here.
  • It’s a little harder to dip than regular coffee. For espresso you need high pressure! Because the coffee is ground so finely, you will find that it is a little harder to press the plunger than normal. Regardless: Go for it!
  • For best results, use an electric teapot. With an electric teapot, the water temperature can be precisely controlled: the optimal temperature is 200 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, if you are traveling or don’t have one, you can approach.

Espresso drinks to prepare with the Aeropress

Here comes the fun part! We typically do not prepare Aeropress espresso unless we are preparing coffee beverages that require a shot of espresso. It’s a great way to do this quickly and easily. Here are some of our favorite espresso drinks:

  • Café Latte or Flat White Incredibly creamy and as good as coffee.
  • Americano This popular coffee beverage softens the bitterness of espresso with hot water.
  • Macchiato A shot of espresso topped with a layer of foam: the perfect drink!
  • Creamy cappuccino with just the right amount of frothed milk and bitter espresso.
  • Mocha Rich and chocolaty, with just the right amount of fluffy milk froth.
  • Dirty Chai Latte Get your chai latte dirty by adding a shot of espresso!
  • Espresso Martini A modern classic cocktail made with coffee, Kahlua and vodka!

How to prepare an Aeropress espresso! Get closer to reality with this affordable coffee maker.

  • 18 grams Espresso roast coffee, or something like that 3 tablespoons coffee beans
  • water (preferably filtered)
  • coffee grinder
  • aeropress
  • 1 Aeropress filter

  1. In an electric teapot, heat the water to 200-205°F.
  2. Grind 3 tablespoons (18 grams) of espresso beans to a fine grind (but not superfine or it will be too heavy for dipping).
  3. Place the disc filter in the Aeropress basket and wet until completely wet. Screw the basket onto the end of the Aeropress.
  4. Pour the coffee grounds into the Aeropress and lightly tap the grounds with a cocktail pestle. Place it over an empty cup.
  5. Pour 85 grams of water into the Aeropress (marks 1 and ½). Wait 45 seconds. Insert the piston into the top of the Aeropress. Gently push down until the plunger is pushed all the way down; You will hear a hiss of escaping air (this process takes about 30 seconds; it’s a bit harder to brew than regular Aeropress coffee).
  6. Remove the Aeropress, unscrew the basket and hold it over a compost bin or trash can. Squeeze the plunger to release the filter and powder. Rinse the Aeropress so it is ready for future use.
