Alex and I get a lot of quick questions about food. And there’s nothing like seared tuna for an easy dinner idea. Seared Ahi Tuna is one of the most delicious foods on earth and literally cooks in under 5 minutes! Toss it with leftover veggies or rice and you have a quick dinner. When we started this site, we mainly published vegetarian and vegan recipes. However, as most of you know, Alex and I are flexitarians: that is, we eat mostly vegetables, but occasionally eat good quality fish and meat. So we thought it was time to share this quick 3 ingredient dinner hack!

How to sear tuna

Seared Tuna is one of the first quick dinner ideas Alex and I made when we started cooking together! If you’ve never had ahi tuna before, now is the time to start. NOW! Seared ahi tuna is not tasty at all. So, if you’re trying to convince someone who’s ambivalent about seafood, seared tuna is a great place to start. Taste good? Seared tuna is so, so delicious. It tastes buttery on the inside and salty on the outside. This is one of Alex’s dishes and one of my favorite dishes and it’s packed with nutrients, especially for people who are mostly vegetarian and vegan like us.

How to sear tuna? It’s so easy and quick:

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a drizzle of olive oil. Add the tuna and Fry about 1 to 2 minutes on each side.
  • Remove the tuna and cut against the grain into slices about 1/2 inch thick. You can see that when you cut it The inside is a beautiful pink color (raw) and only the edges are golden. That’s what you want! Our tuna was sashimi grade and intended for sushi or sashimi, it came pre-sliced ​​which helped.

Which tuna to buy for seared ahi tuna?

Look for labeled fish when buying ahi tuna Sushi or sashimi quality. Although there are no specific regulations on the sushi quality label, it means it is high quality fish that is safe to eat raw. (Read more here.) Look for a tuna steak that is firm in texture and bright red in color at your local fish store.

Alex and I were able to find frozen sashimi-grade ahi tuna at our local grocery store. It was sold in a small box and was intended for preparing sushi or sashimi at home. But it’s perfect for making seared ahi tuna! If you buy frozen, just take it out of the freezer and let it thaw in the fridge on the day of delivery. How to serve seared tuna

Seared Tuna really is a 5 minute recipe! However, to make it a 5-minute dinner, it’s easier to have some leftovers on hand to serve. For our seared ahi tuna dinner, Alex and I used some of the ingredients we had on hand. We’d just made cauliflower tacos with yum yum sauce, so we realized a lot of those components could be reworked for a bowl of seared tuna. Turns out Yum Yum Sauce is also perfect as a seared ahi tuna sauce! Here’s how we outfitted our seared tuna:

Of course you can serve your seared tuna with anything: with rice, on a leaf salad or with one of our fillet sauces.

  1. Dry the tuna. Sprinkle generously with Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper on both sides.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a medium-sized skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak and sear 1 to 2 minutes on each side, until lightly browned on the outside but still brown on the inside. Cut the tuna against the grain into ½-inch slices. Serve immediately.
