Spicy Sausage Pizza
Spicy Sausage Pizza

Put this homemade sausage pizza at the top of your list for your next pizza night. Trust us, don’t skip the hot honey sauce for dipping the crust!

When most people think of pizza, the first thing that comes to mind is pepperoni. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with pepperoni pizza, but I’ve experimented with it Spicy sausage pizza, and I think it rivals any other pizza out there. This is especially true if you pair it with some hot honey for dipping. This pizza is a great addition to your homemade pizza arsenal.

The best dough for this pizza

There are many different pizza dough recipes out there, but for the money (and time) I like No-Knead Pizza Dough. I generally do it a day in advance so it has enough time to rise slowly. Then I take it out to room temperature at least an hour before I’m ready to make pizza.

If you don’t want to mess with homemade dough, you can buy dough at most supermarkets these days, or if you have a local pizza joint, they’ll most likely sell you some balls of dough for a few bucks.

Toppings for Spicy Sausage Pizza

The toppings for this pizza are few, but it’s important not to overcoat the pizza. Add just enough sauce to lightly coat the dough and enough cheese to coat the pizza, but not so much that the cheese piles on top.

For the sausage you will find a good quality and flavorful Italian sausage Tear it up into very small meatballs. Small patties are important so that the sausage cooks through as it cooks. Scatter these meatballs all over the pizza and they will cook very quickly in the hot oven.

Otherwise, I like a little pinch of salt, pepper, and paprika flakes on my sausage pizza. Add some fresh basil when it comes out of the oven and you’re in for pizza perfection!

Bake pizza in the oven

Bake this pizza on a pizza stone in a 500°F oven. Preheat the oven for at least 20 minutes so the pizza stone is nice and hot. Then slide the pizza onto the stone.

The pizza needs to bake in a traditional oven for 8 to 10 minutes to be cooked through. This will vary to some degree by oven and pizza stone, so check the pizza every few minutes. Or you can grill the pizza.

Reheat leftover pizza like a pro

If you have leftover pizza (lucky!), please avoid the microwave! All that work goes to waste if your crust gets soggy in the microwave. Instead, place the pizza in a skillet and heat over medium-high. Cook for a few minutes to allow the crust to warm up. Cover the pan for the last minute to allow the cheese to melt. Be very careful when removing the pizza from the pan. It’s getting very hot!

Raw or boiled sausage to start with?

Start with raw sausage – not in the casing – on your pizza. Tear the raw sausage into small pieces, similar to meatballs. The tiny pieces will cook fully while the rest of the pizza cooks.

ingredients

  • 2 lb Pizza doughdivided into 4 balls

  • 1 Cup Marinara saucestore bought or homemade

  • 1 lb mozzarella cheese (low moisture), grated

  • 8th ounces spicy Italian sausage

  • 2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

  • 1 Sheet fresh basil, for garnish

  • extra flourfor rolling and throwing the pizza

Hot honey dip:

  • 1/4 Cup honey

  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce

  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

method

  1. Warm dough (if chilled):

If your dough has been chilled, take it out of the fridge an hour before you plan to make pizza.

Divide the dough into 4 balls and let them rest at room temperature to make them easier to work with. Cover the dough with plastic, however, to keep it from drying out. (If your dough wasn’t chilled, divide the dough just before shaping.)

  2. Preheat the oven:

Preheat the oven with a pizza stone to 500°F for 20 minutes so the stone is very hot.

  3. Prepare the hot honey dip:

Place honey in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 10 seconds. Then mix the honey with hot sauce and red pepper flakes. Serve the honey as a dip with any pizza!

  4. Assemble pizza:

On a lightly floured surface, roll out 1 ball of dough until it forms a 10 inch round. It should be pretty thin. Top the pizza with a few tablespoons of marinara sauce. I don’t like my pizzas very spicy, but add an extra spoonful of sauce if you do.

Then top the pizza with 4 ounces of cheese and spread 2 ounces of spicy sausage on top. Be sure to tear the sausage into very small meatballs so they cook quickly. Season the pizza with red pepper flakes and a small pinch of salt and pepper.

  5. Bake pizza:

Slide the topped pizza onto the pizza stone and bake for 8 to 10 minutes until the crust is crispy and golden brown and the sausage is cooked through.

  6. Prepare the next pizza:

While the first pizza is cooking, prepare the next pizza.

  7. Allow to cool and serve:

Take the finished pizza out of the oven and let it cool down a bit. Garnish with fresh basil, slice and serve with the hot honey dip. Repeat to bake the remaining pizzas.
