Pomegranate Mimosa with Hard Cider
Pomegranate Mimosa with Hard Cider

Looking for a refreshing drink? Try this simple, fruity and easy to make Mimosa from Cider. The cider’s fruity apple flavor combined with tart pomegranate juice makes this drink perfect for sipping on the porch.

Orange juice and champagne are what you expect when you see mimosa on a menu, but any combination of sparkling alcohol and fruit juice still falls under this category.

However, this unique flavor combination definitely has more apples and a deep acidity of pomegranate.

This is the mimosa you need when you’re craving something sparkly and unique but also want to keep it super casual.

What I love about this drink is that you can dress it up or dress it down. Need a brunch drink? This beautifully colored mimosa still has that fruity kick for sips between egg dishes and waffles. Need an afternoon sip with a few bites of cheese and salami? This sweet and tart drink complements all those salty snacking notes. I love this drink because it works for so many occasions.

What is the best cider for mimosa?

While a traditional mimosa includes a sparkling wine like Prosecco or Cava (or even Champagne), cider is an unexpected alternative that behaves similarly and – since it’s fermented – has the same bubbles you’re looking for.

Second, opt for a dry or “brut” style, meaning it’s less cute. If you’re not sure what style of cider you want and you have a chance to snag a few individual cans, try a few to experiment with. You also need to keep in mind the sweetness of your pomegranate juice (you don’t want sweet cider plus sweet juice!). Choose a dry brut cider if your pomegranate juice is on the sweet side. And if it’s tart, opt for a semi-dry one that’s sweeter (I know, it seems like the opposite!). And if you’re still not sure which can to buy, speak to a representative at your local brewery, or try one of these tips:

  • Golden State Brut Hard Cider
  • Strongbow Cider Original dry
  • Angry Orchard Crisp Apple Unfiltered

Best hard cider mimosa glassware

While flutes and the occasional wine glass are more traditional, you can swap out the glassware if you’re making a non-traditional mimosa!

Small mason jars, a low ball jar, or a 10-ounce beer glass would work here since your nose is still getting all those fruity, yeasty, and spicy flavors in the jar. But you can also fall back on a classic champagne flute at any time.

How to Pour a Hard Cider Mimosa

The bubbles in hard cider aren’t as aggressive as those in Prosecco or Cava, so I’ve found that the order of pouring isn’t as important here.

A gentle stir always helps to mix everything together if you find your pomegranate juice is staying at the bottom of your glass.

How to make a non-alcoholic cider mimosa

To make a non-alcoholic version of this mimosa, substitute a non-alcoholic cider like Martinelli’s. Note, however, that the cider is much sweeter than a cider.

You can reduce the sweetness by adding an ounce or two of lemonade. Start with one ounce and adjust to your preferred sweetness.

How to Garnish Apple Cider Mimosa

Personally, I don’t like pomegranate seeds in drinks, so I wouldn’t suggest you add any, regardless of how pretty they look. I also prefer this special drink without the side dish, because the cider and pomegranate make it so aromatic that I don’t want to distract from it.

But if you want to add a garnish, an apple wheel or some thinly sliced apples would be nice. After slicing, soak the apples in a mixture of 1 cup water and 1 tablespoon lemon juice to prevent browning.
