Homemade Tartar Sauce
Homemade Tartar Sauce

Homemade tartar sauce with mayonnaise, dill pickles, capers and more. It’s quick, easy to make, and way better than anything you can buy in a jar! Serve with fish or shrimp cakes.

confession time. I’m a lover of remoulade.

I think the world of seafood eaters is divided into two camps: those who enjoy tartar sauce with their fish and those who want nothing to do with it. Happy at first camp, I love nothing more than a fish fillet served with a slice of lemon, some tartar sauce and of course coleslaw.

And you know what? It’s good! For real! (Assuming you like tartare sauce to begin with. Otherwise, go ahead, this isn’t for you.)

What are the ingredients in tartar sauce?

This remoulade starts with a base of mayonnaise. To this we mix chopped dill pickles and capers, Dijon mustard, chopped shallots and green onions, hot Tabasco sauce and lemon juice.

That’s it! It’s the easiest thing ever, and making your own tartar sauce always tastes a million times better than anything you can buy pre-packaged at the store.

How to make tartare sauce

Remoulade couldn’t be easier to make. You just put all the ingredients in a bowl, stir them together and voilà! You’re ready to go.

How long does tartare sauce keep?

To store tartar sauce, keep covered and chilled in the fridge. It should easily last a week or more.

Here are 5 ways to use your tartar sauce:

  • Dungeness Crab Cakes
  • Fried catfish
  • salmon cake
  • Fish and chips from the sheet pan
  • cod cake
