A popular blend of dried oregano, basil, rosemary, and other spices is Italian Seasoning. It’s a simple at-home dish that goes well with meats, vegetables, and other foods.

One of the quickest and easiest ways to spice up a dish is with a spice mix. While you can buy pre-made spice mixes at the store, they’re incredibly easy to mix at home. By making your own, you can customize them to suit your tastes and ensure the spices are fresh and flavorful.

Italian Seasoning Recipe

It just makes sense to produce your own seasonings. It’s simple, and you know exactly what’s inside. I love Italian seasoning and use it frequently. It’s the ideal combination of earthy, sweet, and savoury flavours. It complements a wide range of foods, including potatoes, poultry, steak, fish, vegetables, and even bread.

Italian seasoning is one of the best seasoning blends available. Having a good blend on hand expedites cooking. There’s no need to measure out multiple seasonings. Everything is neatly packaged together. It also eliminates the uncertainty of determining how much spice to add to a dish to make it balanced. The Italian Seasoning mixture has already been balanced for you. You’ll appreciate having this pantry staple on hand! If you like Italian seasoning, you’ll notice that this is the basic herb-only version. It’s common to see it with garlic and onion powder, as well as red pepper flakes. It is excellent, but I’d like to have more control over the amount of those ingredients depending on the recipe.

What’s in Italian Spices?

Almost all Italian spice blends contain dried oregano, basil, rosemary, and thyme, however the exact ingredients may differ. Like with us, many also include marjoram and/or sage. Occasionally, salt, red pepper flakes, and/or garlic powder are ingredients in store-bought condiments.

This mixture only uses dry herbs, but you may change it up by including different spices.

How to choose and store spices

Use top-notch, freshly dried spices to make the blend that tastes the best. Get your spices from a dependable vendor who often changes its inventory. Spices should be kept out of the heat in a cool, dark, dry place. Dried herbs can maintain their flavour for up to six months when stored properly.

Italian Seasoning at Home: How to Make It

This quick-to-make homemade Italian seasoning keeps for a very long time. Prepare some to use in your preferred dishes. Combine the basil, oregano, rosemary, marjoram, and thyme in a small bowl. Use as needed.

How to use Italian spices

When you want to give a dish a delightful herbal flavour, use Italian seasoning. It goes nicely with light cheeses like ricotta and mozzarella as well as red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, lemon, and olive oil.

It goes well with various kinds of meat, soups, and roasted, grilled, or sautéed vegetables, making it highly adaptable. Add it to a sauce or dressing using vinegar as the foundation, or mix it with some olive oil to make a quick yet delectable bread dip. Sprinkle on your next Italian sub, pizza, or pasta dish.

Slight variations

  • Spicy: Add a little kick by adding up to 1 tablespoon of red pepper flakes.
  • Garlic: Add 2 tablespoons garlic powder. Be sure to mix it well before use as the granules may sink to the bottom.
  • Other herbs: You can adjust the herbs to your taste or what you have on hand. The marjoram can be omitted or substituted with more oregano, and the sage is optional but adds a nice earthy flavor.
