Worms and dirt are not necessarily words that you associate with food. But when Halloween comes, all bets are off when it comes to creating spooky food for the kids!

Dirt Cups with Chocolate Pudding: Must try!

If you haven’t made worms in dirty chocolate pudding before, it’s super easy. And here we make them extra chocolaty thanks to a custard made from scratch with real chocolate milk.

How to make chocolate pudding dirt cups

To assemble, simply crumble chopped chocolate sandwich cookies (the dirt!) onto the pudding and add a few gummy worms to the crumbs. Wonderfully disgusting!

What is the best chocolate?

When making chocolate pudding from scratch, choose your favorite chocolate to eat! If you like your chocolate sweeter, choose a milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate. If you prefer a less sweet dessert, choose a dark chocolate or one with a higher cocoa content.

Prepare to chill

If you make pudding from scratch you will end up with a “pudding skin” on each cup unless you place a piece of parchment or wax paper on top of the warm pudding before refrigerating. Some people like the pudding skin and find the paper too finicky, while others live for super smooth pudding. You decide which route suits you best!

Strategize ahead

If you’re making pudding from scratch, you’ll need to chill it in the fridge for at least 3 hours before serving, but chilling overnight is really best.

For this recipe, you can make the pudding up to five days in advance. You can even crumble the cookies in a resealable bag and leave the crumbs in the bag until you’re ready to make the desserts. Just put the worms together in “dirt” before serving!

Variations of Dirt Cups to try

If worms aren’t your thing — or it’s not Halloween and you want to make those dirt cups for another occasion — try putting these treats on top of the cup instead.

  • M&M’s
  • Colored Sprinkles
  • Chocolate sprinkles (use them in place of the crushed Oreos if you like)
  • vanilla waffles
  • Layers of whipped cream between layers of pudding
  • Animal Crackers
  • gummy bear
  • swedish fish

How to make your own chocolate milk

No chocolate milk in the house? No problem. You can make this recipe yourself by whisking together 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder and 2 tablespoons sugar with 2 cups whole milk. If the sugar doesn’t dissolve completely, don’t worry. Once you add the chocolate milk to the pan and heat, the sugar will dissolve.

ingredients

For the pudding:

  • 2 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 tablespoon cornstarch

  • 2 cups chocolate milk

  • 1 prize Salt

  • 1 big egg

  • 4 ounces chopped chocolate (about 3/4 cup)

Assemble:

  • 10 ounces Chocolate Vanilla Sandwich Cookiesabout 20 biscuits

  • 12 gummy worms

method

  1. Mix together pudding ingredients:

In a large saucepan, combine the cocoa powder, cornstarch, chocolate milk, and salt and stir to incorporate the dry ingredients into the milk mixture.

  2. Cook pudding:

Cook over high heat until the mixture begins to boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook until the mixture starts to thicken, about 3 to 5 minutes.

  3. Temper egg:

Place an egg in a large bowl and beat with a whisk. Slowly drizzle a little of the hot chocolate mixture into the bowl with the egg, whisking constantly. Continue to slowly add the chocolate mixture and mix well until incorporated. The mixture should still be warm.

  4. Fold in the chocolate:

Add the chopped chocolate and stir until the chocolate is completely melted.

  5. Cool:

Divide the pudding into 4 cups. If you don’t want a skin to form, place a piece of parchment paper on the surface of the pudding. (Omit if you don’t mind the pudding skin.)

Chill in the fridge for 3 hours or overnight.

  6. Prepare the “dirt”:

Place the chocolate vanilla sandwich cookies in a large (1 gallon) resealable bag. Using a rolling pin, crumble the biscuits into crumbs.

  7. Assemble cups:

Divide the biscuit crumbs among the 4 pudding molds. Place 3 gummy worms in the cookie crumb layer, making sure to ‘bury’ some of the gummy worm end as if the worm came out of the dirt. Serve immediately. Enjoy with a glass of real cow’s milk!
