Classic hot sauerkraut recipe with chopped apples and juniper berries.

One of our favorite side dishes is hot sauerkrautdeliciously served with pork or bockwurst – a mild German sausage.

You can also make a sandwich with toasted or grilled dark rye bread, melted Jack, Havarti or Munster cheese, sauerkraut, and avocado.

Juniper berries are berries of the juniper bush; They are traditionally used with sauerkraut.

ingredients

  • 1 (16ounce can or can) sauerkraut (Best is fresh sauerkraut in jars, found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store)

  • 1 Cup dry White wine

  • 1/2 Cup chopped Onion

  • 1/2 Cup peel and chop Apple

  • 10 juniper berriescracked

  • Kosher Salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon Extra virgin olive oil

method

  1. Cook all the ingredients together:

    Put the sauerkraut in a saucepan. Add wine, onion, apple, juniper berries, salt, pepper and oil. Bring to a boil and simmer until onions are soft, 30 to 45 minutes.
