Have you ever made a list of your favorite foods?
For as long as I can remember my family has always had avocados around the house, either outside on the counter ripening or in the fridge. We even had an avocado tree for a few glory years, until it died from a frost. 🙁
No wonder my dad’s favorite sandwich, as he affectionately calls it, is the ALT – avocado, lettuce, and tomato on toast.
Of course he thinks he invented this sandwich, and he did, like thousands of other avocado lovers around the world. I once asked him why not add bacon?
His answer? A grumble of “Why should I? It goes perfectly with avocado,” along with a look that said: if I wanted a BLT, I would have made a BLT.
This is my father. Don’t stand between him and his food.
Of course, if you want to add some bacon strips to your ALT (that would make it a BLAT), be my guest!
Avocado Lettuce Tomato Sandwich (OLD)
The key to a delicious ALT is Salt. The taste of avocados and tomatoes shines with a small pinch of salt.
ingredients
-
Toasted Whole Wheat Bread
-
Sliced avocado (see Slicing and Peeling an Avocado)
-
Lettuce (Boston Bibb or butter lettuce work well)
-
Sliced fresh tomato
-
Kosher salt
-
mayonnaise
method
-
Toast two slices of whole wheat bread for each sandwich. While the bread is toasting, slice the tomatoes and avocado.
-
Spread as much (or little) mayonnaise as you like on one side of each toasted bread slice. Add a layer of avocado slices and sprinkle a little kosher salt on top. Add a layer of lettuce and a layer of sliced tomatoes. Sprinkle a little salt over the tomatoes as well.
-
Top with the second slice of toasted bread. If you like, cut the sandwich in half to make it easier to eat. Enjoy!
